Sony makes moves to stamp out lucrative second-hand market

High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought, retail sources have revealed to GamesRadar.

It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won't own the PS3 titles that they've paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won't be the customer's to sell.

We assume that the thinking behind this move will ultimately be to stop PS3 games being resold several times - which currently snatches potential sales away from Sony - and to counter the impression in consumers' minds that games are only really worth their pre-owned price and are not worth buying new.

When we contacted Sony, it issued us with the following statement: "We have made all of the official announcements at E3 and cannot make any further comments at this time. We will be announcing more news running up to PlayStation 3's launch.

just cause u dont like consoles wraith doesnt mean it should be a failure. on the contrary its gonna own the shit out of its competition.

as far as this goes, i dont think its gonna affect most of the people here, if you know what i mean. lol

^^ u got it all wrong....i love consoles!!
but this bloody new policy of payin the money just for a license is total crap! the playstation division is the only profitable thing sony has....and i hope it goes down....
They cant fleec ppl like this!

Tomm they'll do the same with everything...music , movies etc...

^^ Sony is losing its competiveness slowly but steadily, and yes the Xbox360 along with PC will own the PS3 and its niche titles.
Damn 600$ for a console....

^^ Dont think of it as 600$ for a Console.

Think of it as 600$ was a HD Ready Blu-Ray player w/ Games added :ohyeah:

hahaha.. thats so easy to circumvent..

"For Sale: 1 used PS3 Game Licence. Will throw in the game cd for free."

Cheers.

I don't think such an EULA will stand in the court of law. Anyway... down with sony and its loser policies.

bah! I hope they dont adopt this policy...

Will not work up!

What most people will do is sell the games underground.....

u guys are crying over something that will not even affect most of the people cause as far as i know. every1 will buy when modchip is out.

^^Thats the problem, its taken the Xbox360 7 months to even come close to a modchip. My guess is that the earliest a modchip(if they can find a way to mod it) will probably be late 2007 if not 2008? what do u guys think?

Why r u guyz worried so much about this Thing ? It Ain't Goin to effect anybody here in INDIA , so Just chill and Relax ! I dont Really Care if Thing is implemented or not coz its not goin to effect me so why the hell should I even be bothered ! :)

Ps3 may be an expensive console, but sure is the cheapest Blu-Ray player announced yet :P bundled with next-gen console gaming.

Vista and 360 will have too many similiar games. Vista+ps3 seems like a better option to me. Talking like this price doesn't usually matter as it'll easily take over 2000$ to build a Vista ready gaming rig, and then add 600$ for a blu ray player and a gaming system and a totally different and perhaps much better library of games than what the Vista will offer.

Sony emphatically denies rumor that PS3 will not play secondhand games

However, this latter rumor has, for whatever reason, refused to go away. It has kept resurfacing again and again, to the point where a UK spokesperson for Sony has seen the need for an official denial:

"We have definitely not been communicating that," UK spokesperson Jennie Kong confirmed. "It's false speculation. We don't have any further knowledge about this topic—either officially or unofficially, to be frank."

"There has been no official comment on this since the story that came up a few months ago—it hasn't changed since then, and we're quite surprised by why this has popped up again, to be honest."

The source of the rumor appears to be an aborted effort by a group of Japanese game publishers to outlaw the used software trade. Other companies have fought against the sale of used software before—most notably Oracle who won a copyright infringement lawsuit in Germany against a firm who resold used copies of their database software. However, while this approach might work with expensive enterprise-level programs, it would never fly in the consumer market. Or would it? One has to look at examples such as Valve's Steam, which does not allow players to resell individual games. Instead, a player must sell the entire Steam account. As consoles move more and more towards an always-online model (for example, the Wii will keep a persistent online connection even when in sleep mode) might we not see similar examples?

One thing that is certain, at least for now, is that putting restrictions on playing used games would eliminate the ability to rent games from places like Blockbuster Video. Renting games is one of the main advantages of owning a game console. Sony almost certainly knows this, and realizes that even the presence of a rumor implying that the PS3 couldn't play rented games could have a major impact on sales. This explains the official denials, but why would the rumor persist in the first place?
