Forerunner
8th December - And so it begins....

In a staggering show of strength from the home fans, Sony has managed to achieve in just four weeks what it's taken Microsoft 52 to achieve, with Japanese sales of the PS3 sprinting past those of Xbox 360.

SPOnG wonders what Bill Gates is making of the following quote, which we reported on November 22nd this year:
I wouldn't change positions with them in a million years. I mean, we know what it's like to be a year late. We feel great about the position that we're in. And, of course, they're going to sell a lot in Japan. You know, Sony can make 80,000 bricks, and people would buy them.
At least you were right about Sony selling lots in Japan, eh, Bill.

Figures confirming this sales slaughter have been confirmed by Media Create, the Japanese sales tracking organisation. Its just-published hardware sales figures for the week of 27th November to 3rd December show PS3 hardware sales reach 187,836 units for the period, taking it beyond the Xbox 360's lifetime total of 178,070 units

8 | Dec: PS3 Sales Fly Past Xbox 360 in Japan - News at SPOnG.com

Its not like this was not expected the first place, but amidst all the negative press its been getting lately, this is one piece of good news :)

Unexpected???

This was totally expected. X360 got very cold reception in Japan when it launched. And it never flied as such. Nintendo is whole other story.

Sony and Japan go hand in hand.

What happens to console will be decided in 1 year's time. Sony has lots and lots to do before it can really fly.

Actually what is flying in Japan is Wii and DS lite which even now is selling more than both PS3 and X360.

What could anyone ever expect of the X360 anyway? MS never invested enough in Japanese content, while Sony and Nintendo have always done that.

Unexpected???

Some people just don't get sarcasm, I take it.

MS never invested enough in Japanese content

Japanese content? Define Japanese content. Personally, I think it's mostly because the Japanese are just over nationalistic and hate the X360 since it's a foreign brand. Example: One of the most common excuses given by Japanese people over why they would never own an Xbox was that is was too huge for their tiny homes. You don't see them using the same logic with a PS3, now do you? Of course, the Xbox being unable to match the PS2's sheer number of games and good ones at that may have been a better reason to own a PS2 over an Xbox. That simply isn't the case with the X360 anymore and the Japanese still shun it.

lol some people dont know how to make sure what u are posting should feel like sarcasm. ;)
Anyway, the kind of games that usually make to top 10 list in japan every year are either arcade / fun games or some really good titles like GT4 (iirc it was no2 last year).
I mean games like Animal crossing and Nintendogs were top selling games last year. And yes i have seen animal crossing and nintedogs in action on DS and its just fun arcade game. And thats what sells in japan. And ofcourse brand loyalty will always be there.

Japanese are fiercely loyal people by nature, they found the xbox too bulky, but ps3's size wont bother them.

Understandable. The key is in realizing that I'm not oblivious in matters related to gaming.

That is definitely true, but can you name titles like these that existed on the PS2... or better yet, titles like these that don't exist on the X360 but do exist on the PS3?

As said above....PS is kind of a national pride for Japanese folk.....Its sales wud have exceeded X360 sales even if it was a totally worthless product and even if MS had a 2 yr headstart over Sony.....

Its like comparing the condition of Baseball and Cricket in India.....

The fact is that there are a bunch of weird looking japanese art type games on PS2 (I have seen them on TV, don't ask me their names), while MS has not been able to get 3rd party support there. Besides, MS's flagship products are Halo and now GoW. Well, I don't think the Japanese tend to like those games. Different cultures find different things interesting.

Yes....Don't know why but Japanese gamers have a strange but strong liking for games that have huge robots in them......Thats wat the guy in GamerTV keeps suggesting......

If the games like Halo and GOW had robots as the main leads they might become the best selling games in Japan :P ...

I know that the PS2 has a bunch of quirky titles like Katamari damacy, Frequency, Amplitude, Rez, etc which is still somewhat lacking. Weird art styles also make sense since they're well recieved in Japan than in the west but that has little to do with the X360's predicament.

For example, currently the highest selling title on the PS3 in Japan is Ridge racer 7. A game that has been available on the X360 for a year now... and yet I didn't see people going nuts over the X360. RR6 was even the first ridge racer title an MS console has ever recieved and it still was shot down by the Japanese. Easily the best example of unwanten bias.

The Japanese said the Xbox was too big compared to the Ps2/Ps2 slim and the fact that naturally Japanese hands are not 'Big Enough' to control the huge Xbox controllers comfortably.

The 2nd reason is Ps3 = Japanese, and the 3rd is Final Fantasy.

As long as Sony has got these 3 points by their side, Japan's not letting go of Playstation. And who here thinks Sony will not release a miniature version of the Ps3 3-4 years down the line? They did it with the bulky Playstation (PsOne), they slimmed out the Ps2 (PsTwo), and they will follow the tradition with the Ps3 (PsThree on its way!)

you also 4got 5th reason which is winning eleven. yes i know every1 will say it comes on all platforms. but it comes 4months earlier. jap version of winning eleven. this was the trend with ps1 & ps2. i guess should remain the same.

not to forget games like tekken.

Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Zelda and Mario are the 4 biggest franchises no Japanese gamer misses and always stands proud by. So when I mean FF, it automatically means MGS as well :P

Well, I feel they'd never get an X360 even if it did have all those titles. Also, what the hell Params! What does the inevitable release of a slim PS3 have anything to do with why anyone would want a PS3 now since it's the same size as that of an Xbox? By your logic, most Japanese should be waiting till the Slim's release which is not happening.

Fair enough, you got me there :P

Well, I feel they'd never get an X360 even if it did have all those titles.

I highly doubt that. Just the release of a japanese anime based RPG 'Blue Dragon' alone is projected to boost X360 sales. I can assure you if Final Fantasy and Metal Gear leave Ps3, SONY = 'Game Over' in its most literal sense.

So yeah, you can say Ps3 is hanging on the edge with these two exclusives alone.
