Although PS3’s UK launch was a success, it seems that the second week on the market for Sony’s console was close to a disaster.
According to figures from media analyst Chart Track, the PS3 has seen itself at launch fly off store shelves faster than any previous home console system (excluding handhelds) in the UK, selling over 165,000 machines in its first two days at retail. The previous record holder for home console sales was the Wii, which is estimated to have sold roughly 105,000 units in its opening weekend.
However, recent sales figures from Chart Track have indicated that the second week of sales following their storied launch have so far failed to live up to expectations. Second week sales for PS3 in the UK were around 33,000 consoles, which is a pretty significant drop off.
The lack of interest for PS3 translated also in a lack of interest for games built for Sony’s console, which have also registered a 60% decline.
