Apparently the gloves are off in Europe, and it seems to be working. At French events, one store sold 50 consoles out of 1000, and another store sold 300 out of 1000. At the massive under-attended event at the Eiffel Tower, where they were told to expect 3000 people, roughly 40 people turned out ... security was still turning people away without invitations. One unlucky gate crasher said, "I came from the suburbs, perhaps they don't like my face." At least the French are brutally honest.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald the PlayStation 3 launched last night with "officials, media and security outnumbering customers." The 500 retailers on the continent opened their doors for a midnight launch and despite the estimated 20,000 pre-orders "most stores were virtually deserted."

The Herald says even the official launch event at Myer's Pitt Street store had only 40 people in line at midnight "causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem." The gentlemen who ended up being first in line showed up at 9 PM. Adding insult to injury, television producers "unashamedly" had the crowd fake cheer for the cameras. A local radio station even had their on-air talent create "bogus cheers" to convince listeners that a major event was going on. Looks like the hype accompanying the U.S. launch has all but vanished. We'll get a better picture of the PS3 PAL release later this evening when reports of the European launch trickle in. Maybe the land down under is just full of Xbox and Nintendo fanboys?

Deciding that deviousness was the order of the day, they had agents in both London and Paris throwing monkey wrenches into the works at Sony-sponsored events that included:

* Handing out chairs to the weary fans waiting in the PS3 lines that were printed with a link to this site on the back of them.
* Sending SMS messages to game journalists saying "The Xbox 360 team wishes you a good night."
* Driving boats past the Sony event adorned with "XBOX 360 HEARTS YOU" signs.
* Arming themselves with whistles and blowing them from rooftops to drown out the noise of Sony PR.

Well, with the Wii currently dominating Japan and the X360 dominating the US, Europe is very important to Sony right now and they may have just ruined it. With the price point a lot higher in many European nations, it makes the PS3 look all that more unattractive at the moment.
 
Wow! I am a bit of a 360 fanboy (probably comes from being complete PC fanboy) but even I kinda feel bad for Sony. As arrogant their behaviour has been I still want them around for PS4.

Still they have no one to blame but themselves for this. Stupid idiots.
 
Sony deserves it!! They could have sold a cheaper ps3 without that blu ray.But no they wanna indirectly force people to buy blu ray!! Now let them suffer the consequences.:D:D
 
I heard somewhere that they were giving out LCD TV's for standing some 48 hours in the queue waiting for the PS3! :S

They were presented the Hi-Def TV for the patience that they showed ..

i dont mind standing 48hrs for a free hdtv ;)
 
I heard the free HDTV was only for the first in line. I guess Sony was trying to create launch day riots like the ones in the US. What some companies won't do for some attention.
 
I'm laughing at M$ right now for sending in a boat saying "Xbox Loves You" in Ps3's French Launch Party.

And I won't be worried about Ps3 just yet because according to latest data :

1. PS3 is the most pre-ordered console in Euro and Aussie (yes, more than the Wii even)

2. PS3 is selling better than Xbox360 did when it launched in the United States. Videogame Charts

And given the fact that there hardly has been any killer game yet and that humongous price, PS3 is doing just fine. Its slowly picking up momentum and should get a boost once MGS4 hits.
