I've decided to buy a PSP over MP3 player/Xbox 360/mx5021

MP3 player was closest but i wanna game too...so i guess its better choice.

XBOX 360 : wont have time for it once am back in college.

Speakers : They can wait

Now i got few question on PSP

Games : I'm sure there would be plenty.

Music : how good is quality, and how easy is it to plug in and listen when walking around?

Videos : What formats can it play? How much space does a 30 min video take?

Browsing : Will it work in my college campus (wi-fi)? can i check mails and stuff with it?

Final :

Whats with the firmware thing?

Why is it important?

Which one should i look for?

Pros/cons if any?

Please let me know if anyone bought it at Bangalore. Whats its price and how much for a 2GB card.

TIA :)

Ok,Let's start...

Games- Plently of titles and look amazing on the psp's high res sharp made lcd. Also the god of war is releasing for the platform very soon.

Music- The quality is not very good , albeit lower than the walkman series of phones eg the w810i. The unit is not portable given it's size and the easy to crack lcd.

Videos- This is one of the best things you can do on a psp. The formats i can play are .mp4 and one more ,I forgot :P The screen is the best part about the console. You can also download formatted movies of torrent sites.

Wifi- Yes you would be able to browse and check mails through the integrated browser. Though the range won't be very good.

Firmware- The fw upgrades or downgrades are for playing Game/Movie iso's from the memory stick. The recent one is 3.40...It allows you to play iso files straight from the mem stick.

Try to get a Fw 1.5 or a 2.71 preferably.

Read this guide-

PSP-Homebrew Info Site

Memory stick- A non original 2gb card would cost About rs 1400.

Hope this helps!

new psp at bajaj complex near national market comes to aound 8.5k

sony 2gb memory stick pro(fake) comes to around 900bux

regarding he firmware try to get 2.71version anything higher ull need a gta lcs unpatched disc to upgrade

Thanks guys!

How about warranty and stuff?

Any accessories i need to buy?

Edit:

and how do i check for firmware?

nvm : Checked the guide

Ok I own a PSP and that too TA -082 mobo :bleh:

Downgraded it to 1.5>3.03OE-A

Downgrading there is always a chance to brick your psp (1%) though If done properly it is safe (just check the MD5 hash properly)

There are loads of titles available both in UMD (legal) and ISOs(Illegal).

Sound Quality - Well it is not a thumper if you listen it in noise with inbuild speaker but It is an I-Pod killer with good pair of headphones. I checked with BOSE and I-Pod shuffle headphone sound quality is decent. I-Pod headphone would be a good go.

Movie - it supports basically MP4 format and now with new f/w it supports 3gp and some other formats (i still have to upgrade to enable these)

WiFi - If you have WiFi enabled in your premises you can do all what you do in iExplorer. Check mails, visit website and post on TechEnclave forums :) like this. Though using the inbuild keyboard is pain for new users.

Last but not least PSP FTW

And for sure buy PSP PlayGear (Logitech) and Screen protector and Your PSP is safe from scratches. Both cost around 1k total cost.

Audio - It's decent, but if you want to primarily use it as a music player, I wouldn't recommend it. If you want a game player and a video player with music functionality, it's a good buy.

Video - Drool worthy screen, and videos are brilliant. Latest firmwares play most files. You can convert any file to PSP format. (Not compressed very much though. Maybe a 10-20% benifit. So a 350Mb avi of a tv show may go to 300mb on card)

Games - There are some very good games out for the system. And the situation is getting better.

Browsing - Works decently, but it's a bit frustrating using the on-screen keyboard.

Others-
Firmware version only important if you want to run pirated games/homemade software. If you want to run pirated stuff, buy a PSP with firmware exactly 2.80 or below(the best bet for you). You can get one with firmware 2.81-3.03 but then you have to have a particular game (GTA) to run pirated stuff.

Only drawback with the system is that it's larger than what one would consider a portable size. You'll almost definitely need a bag or something to carry it around comfortably. If you are going to use it primarily as a music player, battery life may not be upto what you may expect.
