The next Sony PlayStation Portable firmware update will include E-MAIL capability called "Sony Mail," according to an article to appear in the March issue of PlayStation Magazine. And Sony plans to release later this year the GPS add-on for the PSP teasingly demonstrated at a couple of shows last year. (props to ARS Technica and Electro-Plankton)

Wow Sony is really tempting users to update there firmware ;)

Only now they add phone capabilities to the PSP it wud be the hottest selling device worldwide.

@dipdude: That's just speculation at the moment. And the next firmware will also include software for playing videos, music etc. directly off a PS3.

@Quad Master: lol I'm sick of people saying that the PSP should have a phone. It's a GAMING DEVICE! You wouldn't expect the XBox 360 or PS3 to have a phone would you? :P

You CAN use it as a web phone if you have the SOCOM headset and a Wi-Fi connection though. I don't have a link to the article which stated how this is done, but I'm sure it can be done. :)

I see Sony doing this because of its poor sales compared to DS's. But those are very worthy upgrades too.

Actually, Sony is just trying to get people to upgrade their firmware so they can't play pirated games any more. :P The e-mail thing is pretty redundant cause you can already access web mail through the web browser and the GPS probably won't have maps for Indian cities, so the upgrade is useless for Indians unless Sony adds more features.

What?? What PDA functions does it have???? :P No organiser, no calender, no office programs, an OS which was designed to keep you from running external software... All it has is a Web Browser which, according to you, is completely useless cause it doesn't have Flash, RSS feeds, streaming video etc. :P So how would you justify calling it a "casual...PDA...thingy..."?

And besides, giving it phone capabilities would require additional hardware. A firmware update just won't do it, unless you use a web phone thru Wi-fi.

^ All those features can be added via homebrew. And I didn't call it a PDA,its something of the sort;a portable media centre,if you will.Thats the word I was looking for. But its got a crapload of functions other than just gaming and its current game lineup is still comparitively weak as compared to *other* handhelds ;) I know thats gonna change this year,so don't even start :P But its attractive right now more for its other features than for its games. As for the browser, yes,I still think its crappy.

And Im not sure about the phone functionality, but it would be neat if they could add that anyway.

HELP Guyz ! I have 8000 Bucks That I can spend ! Now i have to choose between a video 20 gb I Pod or a psp ! What should i buy , plz recommend me something !

BTW PSP is looking very sexy in that pic dip !

@bluffmaster: That really depends on what you want more - gaming/movies on the go or lots of great quality music. The PSP is excellent for gaming and movies, while the iPod has lots of storage for music files, so you can have good quality audio. Storage space is a problem with the PSP as the maximum you can get is a 4GB HDD which costs more than the PSP itself. The bundled 32MB memory stick is useless. You could go in for a PSP giga pack in which you will get a 1GB mem stick.

Y But cant we watch movies on i pod ?? And if psp's memory is so less then how can we see movies on it ?? Plus how much space does one game save take on the psp ?

You can watch video on ipod video not any other ipod iirc.

on the PSP you can convert the media file to mp4 file and get 1GB memory stick.

You will fit movie easily on it. (pspvideo is a good tool for this)

@Bluffmaster: I think you can watch movies on a video iPod, but it's screen is smaller, so the PSP is better suited for movies. For watching a movie on PSP, you either need the movie UMD or a big mem stick so you can put the movie on it. It doesn't have any in-built storage space other than the flash stuff used by the XMB.

Games saves are very small, maximum around 1.2 MB I think. If you meant ISOs, then those can be huge i.e. upto 1.6 GB.

@ Funkymonkey and Deathdart : Uh guys,Bluffmaster has 8k :P How do you expect him to fit a PSP and 1gig mem stick into into his budget?

@deathdemon89: He's the one who said he wants either a PSP or an iPod video 20GB. Honestly, I dunno if he can get either within that budget. :P Me and monkey are just giving him some info/tips. ;)

Bluffmaster, you won't be able to buy either of those in 8k,AFAIK :P But I'm pretty certain an iPod Mini/Shuffle would fit into you budget. If you want a gaming device, the DS is a good idea :thumb:

Yeah, DS is the way to go. Unless you can find a PSP for 8k somewhere. :S Try eBay.com, you can get it pretty cheap there.

No actually at INDIATIMES iam getting an ipod video with i think 4gb space for 8k and free return airtickets for a couple anywhere in INDIA.

LOL Email and web browser on a psp is basically useless. It doesnt have a decent means of input. In neither has a keyboard, nor a touchscreen. How many ppl would be interested in entering text using an analog controller :P. The way I see it, sony should rather get spend money on improving the game library than waste resources on stupid gimmicks like this. This is not even equal to the cheapest of PDAs cos it doesnt have a proper way to enter text :P.

Actually, you use a D-pad to enter text :P But you're right about it not having a proper way to input text.I think they're gonna release a QWERTY keyboard sometime.Iv seen pics of those. But thats just speculation at the moment.
