PSP Trojan Discovered

psp9iw.jpg

Symantec Security Response experts have identified the first Trojan that targets Sony Playstation Portable systems.

The PSP device is protected so that users can only run Sony "approved" games. However hacks available on the Web enable users to run their own games. The trojan, named "Trojan.PSPBrick," by Symantec pretends to be such a hack. It is reportedly aimed at "modders," or those who seek to hack the portable device so that they can run their own games.

The user must choose to download it. When people install it, the malicious software actually deletes key files and renders the PSP inoperable.

Symantec maintains that the trojan is a Category 1 threat (Category 5 being the worst) circulating in the wild but there are no confirmed infections.

Symantec maintains that it has been anticipating threats targeting non-traditional devices for some time now and expect to see more in the future.

ohh thats the breaking news for me.......ppl having the device must b carefull now......thks for the info again quad

This is the reason why I only download Homebrew from the PSP-Updates site. They test it before it's put up on the site. The PSPBrick s/w was a really bad one though as it was released when a lot of discussion about a downgrader coming soon was going on. Obviously it tricked a LOT of people.

What if you download the Trojan too Dart? :P

Well, its bound to happen. No eletronics with an Interfact will be spared :(.

@goldenfrag: Don't worry, I know exactly what file it is (It's called "PSP Team update" or "PSP Team Downgrade"). Besides, I have PSafeP which is sort of like a virus scanner for the PSP. And I only download stuff from PSPUpdates and PSP hacks because they test their homebrew before releasing it. So I guess I'm pretty safe till someone makes a virus that spreads through Wi-Fi. :hap2:
