So, not only is the PSP going to play movies it’s also going to have as much storage capacity as the PS3?

Apparently so if a slide displayed at Samsung’s Japanese launch for its N-Series 1.8 inch hard drives is anything to go on. This has fuelled speculation that the PSP2 will indeed come heavily armed with a 60Gb N-Series and its 60 movies of 135 minutes each capacity.

Sony and Samsung have been in cahoots for some years now, working on LCD panels, sharing patents on the fabrication of semiconductors, and, of course, co-sponsoring Blu-Ray.

The move could also see the final death knell for the universally under-valued, underused and under-loved Universal Media Disc (UMD) format, which has been kicked into touch by developers, retailers and, well, most people.

PSP2 Gets 60Gb Hard Drive! - News at SPOnG.com

This is awesome news.

Now with a 60 GB HDD on the PSP its sure gonna rock as a gaming handheld + portable media player.

The PSPs LCD is simply amazing and it wud be real fun storing and watching movies on the PSP 2.

They should make it cheaper and have it compete with the iPod...

difficult I say...the processing power and the quality of the display of the PSP are infinitely superior to the iPod

But if Sony could manage to squeeze in a hi capcity HDD in the current form factor and price point, they have a total winner in their hands

Comparing PSP with ipod is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are made for different purposes. An important reason why ipod sells is because of the ease of use and that it is relatively small and light weight and fits easily in the pocket. There is no way psp2 can be as smaal and light as an ipod.I don't think many people would like to go jogging with their psp2 no matter how good it is.If better features was all that the people cared then they would have ditched apple a long time ago and bought archos 30 or 60 gb wifi PMPs as they easily beat ipod in every department except size.

Psp 2 will be competing against nintendo DS lite( or whatever it is calleed) not the ipod/. It will be a gaming device first and others features like music or even movie playback are secondary features. But it will be a lot better than psps.Maybe there should even have a built in gps.

the PSP has the potential to make an entry into a new segment.....Total Entertainment on the Go. The PSP can be literally used for anything, right from surfing to playing games, watching movies and playing emulated NES and Sega games. With 60 GB hardisk, it can overcome two hurdles it had in past, UMD Disk Format and Limited Storage by Memory Stick.

I will still use a iPod for listening to music, but I would prefer PSP for watching movies on the go. Its the best portable video player. Zune and iPod screens are too small and really bad for movies which need subtitles to be read...such as Naruto :P

The 60GB thingy is looking promising. If they can integrate a touch screen like a PDA, I will really dump my laptop for it. The stylus will make is easier to surf the web.

Btw, the official name will not be PSP '2', would mean the direct successor to PSP. This is simply a redesign (Ninny DS - Ninny DS Lite!).

This releases next year, it'll be my Christmas purchase.

eh, I mean this year :P
