Couple of friends of mine r doing courses in C-DAC Pune nd r staying in rented apartment above Chroma Center in Aundh area. They just wanna know whether EVDO service from BSNL will work there at decent speed? Which ISP provides EVDO service in that area?

The last i heard, BSNL had stopped new EVDO connections in Pune. The connection albeit steady, does not offer great download speeds 8-12Kpbs if i remember right.

They are better off with a basic 128kbps (16Kbps) broadband line.

My friends r living in a rented apartment and that too just for 6-8 months, the duration of their course at C-DAC so they cannot opt for a fixed hard line based Internet connection as it is not feasible to them. They just want a wireless method of internet connectivity from any ISP, be it BSNL or Airtel.

Couple of days back i checked with bsnl pune for me and they said they dont have usb modems with them. So in case someone surrenders their connection it would be given to new customers.

By that logic i dont understand, if new customer opts to purchase modem, will he get second hand modem? And if all infra is supporting higher no of customers why not have bulk order of new modems?

How about unlocking other companies modems (from similar service) to use it with bsnl? Are they going to allow it (most probably not but would it be possible someway)?

It's 2mbps UL at approx 900 Rs incl tax and modem rental of 200 bucks is most viable option for wireless broadband (if its reliable that is...)

So what u r saying that we can weedout BSNL as probable ISP, then do ne other ISP like Airtel,Reliance or TATA have good EVDO service in Pune & especially in that area?

if you want a Evdo kinda service reliance is there. they have reasonable service in eastern parts of pune like kalyani nagar. no idea about aundh.

the only other option is if they are ok with a EDGE connection. check out aircel.
they seem to be offering a 98 rupees recharge with which you get 30 days unlimited surfing. worth the money. about 12kbps download speeds at my place which isnt bad for the money :p
