A Q6600 B3 idling at 90degrees and going to 100degrees under load isnt a good thing right?

Also Windows performance index score has dropped from 7.1 to 5.8.
I checked it against CPU-Z and saw that the processor does not go to 2.4GHz when under load but spikes and drops back to 1.6Ghz throughout the cpu performance check.
I checked my board, it has an option which drops core voltages of CPU when die temp hits threshold. I switched that off, but no improvement. I don't know if it actually did something. And I am not exactly enthusiastic about pushing my processor in load while it's operating at 100degrees.

Is the processor dying or a new processor fan will solve the issue?
Also i read that operating temps of the Q6600 is 45degrees? It isnt right? Cause mine has always idled at around 70 and gone to 90 when under load.

You have to reinstall the CPU Heat sink. First open your cabinet and check if the CPU fan is even spinning. Remove the CPU cooler, clean it properly with Isopropanol. Also clean the CPU so that there is no old Thermal paste on it. Then apply some thermal paste on it and put back the CPU cooler. In case the fan is not spinning, you will have to buy a new CPU cooler.

Basically your CPU is throttling due to over heat, to protect itself. Re-do the HSF+TIM.

Your proccy is surely overheating, seems like you haven't cleaned it for a while. So clean the HSF unit and apply a fresh layer of TIM of good quality and not the generic ones. And check if the temps drop down to normal.

And about your second query its because of the CPU throttling due to high temps. Cleaning will solve that too:)

Yeah I did all that already! If it wasnt spinning it wouldve hit threshold n stopped.
So anyway i have done all that. The fan is clean, and the fan spins at almost 3K (speedstep disabled).

the fan makes a lot of whirring noise though. Time to buy a new fan?

I really don't think a new fan will help here if the older one is already clean and spinning well. It would be ideal if you can borrow someone's heat sink and try it for yourself once. The way it is behaving seems like the Heat sink hasn't been placed properly but you just said that you have done that recently.

yeah i have. maybe the pins of it is loose. that i definitely won't realize if there is a slightest of contact issue. anyway, will play safe. probably get a new heatsink.

Hyper 212+ is an awesome heat sink and is a totally VFM one. You won't regret getting one. But before you do that, see if your cabinet is of sufficient width for it. It is a tall heat sink.

Oh i got it solved. Turns out, one of the the pin was broken. and the fan was slightly angled, which i couldnt see when seen from above. I got a CM TX3. Processor is fine now, idles at 50 and at 70 under load. thanks for helping out.
Oh and somewhere else, i had posted a thread for a new gfx card, which i thought i needed cause games were quite slow, turns out it was the CPU which bottlenecked the card. Everything is fine so far. Touch wood!

Thanks,
