My vote wud have gone for PII 550+Biostar 790gx A3+ + 4gb DDR3 combo but when u r ready to spend 20k on an amd rig( PII 965 + ddr2 mobo + 4gb ddr2 ram) , u shud go for an i5 rig .

I guess ur total budget turns out to 11.5k(proccy)+4k(mobo)+4.5k(ram) = 20k max

So U can go for i5 rig,

Core i5 750 - 10.2k

Gigabyte GA P55 UD2 - 6.5k

2gb Transcend DDR3 - 2.5k / 2x2gb Transcend DDR3 - 5k

Total - 19k / 21k

I wud prefer i5 rig with 2gb DDR3 for now and later upgrade to 4 gb DDR3 when u save the money in 1 or 2 months time.

The i5 rig will be best suited if ur budget is 20k ( I assume since u were going out for a PII 965+Biostar 790gx+4gb DDR2 )

Choose i5 rig if ur budget lurks anywhere between 17-20k. It will be futureproof and is much better than any amd rig at that price.

+1 for Anubis only if u have budget of 17k-20k.

Otherwise if ur budget is less than 15k , go for

PII 550 - 5.2k
Biostar 790GX A3+ - 6.2k
4gb DDR3 - 5k
Total - 17k

Whichever way round ur budget touches 17k.

I think the i5 rig will be a better choice.

the socket 1156 i5 platform won't be getting any of the newer cpus from intel

the am3 socket in amd would be getting 6 core cpus next year

the am3 has longer life and better upgrade prospects and with a 965be on a 790 based board the gaming performance is very close to an intel solution.a few frames here and there don't matter.

i would go for a cheap dual core and save cash for the 6 core cpus next year.

Yes hexa core is not supported. COnfirmed

We keep talking about future upgradability but how many of us upgrade the proccy only? 7 times out of 10 times we will upgrade the whole platform, because either one or more parts of the platform causes a bottleneck.

What makes if we migrate from DDR 3 to DDR4 or DDR5 or PCIE bus wont reach the end of road by then, or what if DDR 3 prices are higher

I wud always recommend buy what is better at present.

U cant predict tech for future

But tell me guys its same question again how many of us do really change proccy and not the mobo also while upgrading? Secondly wat gurantee is there that mobo u buy for futureproof won't be outdated , burst etc ? We wud always want to put proccy on a new mobo .
Go for wat is best now rather than thinking ab8 future (in case of mobos) .

+1 for that, cant predict the future
