Qualcomm has announced two new additions to their ever expanding Snapdragon S4 line of mobile chipsets. Enter the new Snapdragon S4 MSM8226, and it's CDMA brother the S4 MSM8626. These SOCs support two active sim cards at a time, making us believe that the next Indian manufacturer to announce a new quad core smartphone in the coming months might end up using one of these babies (or the ever increasing popular Mediatek chipset instead). Read on to know more about these budget minded psets.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8226 and MSM8626

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8226 and MSM8626 are unique in the sense that they are Qualcomm's first quad core processors to incorporate a low power yet high performance ARM Cortex A7 architecture based CPU core. Earlier, Qualcomm had announced new Snapdragon S4 Play chipsets that pack quad core processors, albeit made of four ARM Cortex A5 cores, really putting a big question mark on the performance. These new chips aren't a part of the Snapdragon S4 Play family, but neither are they packing Qualcomm's great Krait CPU architecture based CPU cores. Let's have a look at it's features:
  • Quad Core ARM Cortex A7 CPU
  • Adreno 305 GPU
  • 1080p video capture and playback
  • upto 13 MP camera module support
  • WTR2605 multi-mode radio
  • GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou

The new WTR2605 multi-mode radio has been tailored especially by Qualcomm for the Chinese TD-SCDMA network. The new transceiver is said to be 40% more power efficient and 60% smaller than previous generation.

Qualcomm will begin sampling these new chips by Q2 2013, which is rather too late. C'mon Qualcomm, bring on budget performing quad core chips a tiny bit sooner.
