Guide
I want to capture/record videos from my DTH STB in a computer. I don't have the recording feature in my STB. It's just a regular HD STB. I have few queries about this..

  1. Can I use a cable like this (RCA to USB) and receive the streams via USB ?
  2. If suppose that is possible, that would be digital data right ? Some uncompressed raw streams of video data? What I understand - to record those I would have to compress using some codecs (H264, MPEG etc) and put it in some container (mkv, mp4 etc).
  3. From the STB, can I access videos from both HDMI and RCA ports simultaneously ?
  4. If this cable (RCA to USB) wouldn't do what I intended, what are my alternatives?
Could someone please help me regarding this.

TIA.

EDIT: This EasyCAP does what I exactly needed. But still, I would be glad if someone answers the above queries.

1. Not possible to convert analog to digital with a simple cable. You need some powered device.
2. N.A with the cable. You need a capture card which can capture both through RCA and HDMI if your looking at capturing HD streams. Ideally the capture card should have onboard encoding so it does not lock down your PC during recording.
3. Thing is you will see only one channel at a time. The card will switch between hdmi and rca inputs. You can't see two different channels unless your stb has that option.

Avermedia and Hauppauge have products in this HD capture range.
The cards are quite costly.

Thanks for the info.
I am not looking for HD recording, so only RCA would suffice. So wouldn't this EasyCAP would do what I needed?

And also I don't want two different channels on the two ports (HDMI and RCA). Single channel is fine. But can I access the both ports simultaneously from the STB ?

For SD recording the product you linked to is ok. It can only record in max dvd format through a software interface. Don't expect high quality recordings since the analog cables are a weak link.
Yes. Both ports are always on on the stb. You could watch tv on hdmi and record on pc via RCA.
