CPU/Mobo Query from a novice about RAM & Processor speed.

Hi TEians,

I have very little idea about the operation of processor. My Processor is Pentium Dual Core E5700 3ghz & my RAM is DDR2 800mhz 2x2gb. After I ran Cpuiz application, I came to know that my processor's core speed is 1.2ghz and RAM running at 400mhz.

In view of the above, I have few doubts which you all keep clear out: -


1) Is clock speed and core speed one and the same thing? If yes, why not cpuiz showing 3ghz instead of 1.2ghz?? If No, let me know about the difference of both speeds.

2) Why my RAM running at 400mhz instead of 800mhz??

I have attached screenshots for reference.

I would be very glad if my queries get cleared. Thankyou.

1) Yes, it is the same. When at idle, the processor downclocks itself hence the 1.2ghz that you see. It goes up based on demand so you can see your max clockspeed by using a CPU bench tool like Prime95.

2) DDR stands for double data rate. So DDR2-800 actually work at 400 Mhz.

Is that all true??? then why the speed of this DDR2 is 800?? It may be 400x2???

^ yup in DDR2 modules the clock speed is doubled as data transfer is done on both the rising and falling edge of each clock signal.
