Question about RAM and paging file size

My laptop was having 2GB+256MB DDR2 RAM. Was constantly getting the message from Vista saying memory is less and to close programs like Firefox. So I replaced the 256MB stick with a 2GB so now the total RAM is 4GB.

However I still occasionally (though less frequently) get the message about low memory.

I have set the OS to manage virtual memory automatically.

Is there anything I can do other than stop using Firefox or increasing RAM to optimize my system's performance, especially in the memory management side?

Its simple as can be seen in the pic.

Allocated paging size is lower then recommended.

Virtual memory size should be double than your ram size.

Make sure to select a drive other than C: which has atleast 6gb free space and then accordingly allocate Manually 5000MB & restart the lappy.

And never ever set the OS to manage the virtual paging automatically. :)

As I do not have any extra drive that has at least 6GB free space in this laptop, is it ok to manually set virtual memory to 8GB (twice the amount of RAM per your recommendation) in C drive?

In your C: drive space available is shown as 35381MB. Currently 3361MB space is available for paging.

I don't think this is paging memory issue since windows is managing the same by itself.

You will need to check which application is using so much RAM from task manager.

Choose the Custom Size, allot a total of 3 GB initial/4.5 GB Maximum on C Drive & 3 GB initial/4.5 GB maximum on D Drive. Restart... Just a query, Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit version of Vista?

I defragged the computer using PerfectDisk and now everything is fine.

Thanks for your replies guys. I will get my new Dell XPS 15 on Monday and then I will hardly be using this laptop.

@St.John: 32-bit.

I asked because a 32 bit OS wouldn't have recognized more than 3.25 GB of RAM anyways, so generally a person shouldn't have more than 3 GB of RAM on a 32 bit OS... Congrats on the purchase, Dell XPS 15 is a very nice machine...
