Hi All,

I had a query, when a Computer or LCD tv or AC is switched off but is connected to the main power in your home and the main power switch isnt turned off.

In such situation is there power consumption? if yes how much ? or what does the consumption depend upon in such state?

If no ... :) good

Yes there is a little power consumption! But the margin is not that high but overall if you do switch everything off from the main's you'll maybe have 300~400 Rs difference on each months bill. But this will vary on the product used.

My LCD monitor consumes 0.3 Watts on sleep mode.

Also depends on the Star Rating...in sleep/standby mode the one with star rating will cosume almost 1/7 of power than that which is not star rated..

Saving should be about 50 Rs if single phase meter. Take that to 100 Rs for 3 Phase Electricity meter.

LCDs consume hardly about 1W during standby. This is generally specified in the tech specs of any LCD. I'm not sure how much an AC would consume though.

The simple way to tell is the kind of switch used.

If you need a remote or a soft switch (press once) to turn your equipment on, it consumes a little power from the mains, enough to keep the circuitry that actually turns the device on to monitor the status of that switch. So a remote controlled window or split AC or microwave oven, almost all new computers etc will be drawing a bit of power - usually under a watt or so.

If you have a clicky switch, the device actually disconnects the mains internally. This would be the rocker switch behind most modern PSUs, *all* AT-style PCs (plenty still in active use even to this day), microwaves with a timer knob instead of a control panel, and ACs with rotary switches, and most CRT TVs (though not all). This would basically mean zero power consumption.

it will not consume any power if it is 'switched off' ..it will consume power only if it is 'standing by'

consider the following..

LCD Screen >> Mains Power ON >> Picture being displayed = 35-40W (whatever that is rated power consumption at all pixels = white)

LCD Screen >> Mains Power ON >> No picture, All black as Standby mode in windows >> Rated idle power consumption (below 1W) This is the state which will bring the display to normal state if you press any key on keyboard...

LCD Screen >> Mains Power ON >> LCD OFF using Power key on LCD >> As good as Mains OFF. (very little may be used just to initiate the power circuitry in case of digital or touch sensitive power keys.. but negligible.)

According to the GreenPoint requirements the total power consumption of those appliances in a standby mode should be kept under 1W with 0.5W efficient load.

Also depends where you are living.

When i was in UK ,Didnt use LCD for TV or Computers. As the amount of electricity saved using LCD's against CRT, was negated by Heating bills needed to keep the house warm. CRTs do help keep the house warm
