Does one need to register a drive's S/N on their site within a certain number of days after purchase date to be eligible for the warranty?

I tried looking around their site, but 20 minutes and 20 open tabs later, still no answer.

Yes, I know about that :).
But just wondering if there's some hidden clause where you got to register the S/N within some time-frame.

Like how Zotac handles the warranty on their products.

No. No hidden clauses, no proof of purchase. Just type the serial number in while submitting RMA form. Does not matter if you bought it new or used, they will pick up and deliver anywhere.

even Zotac's isn't too hidden I guess.
It's a standard 3 year warranty and they make you register if you want additional 2 years.

ermm.. WD?
idk for sure :-|

But I guess that's how it should. I know that for Asus atleat, they generate shipping labels and send 'em over. you print 'em out, and drop off the package at a FedEx outlet.

If you want to be eligible for Zotac's warranty in India, you are required to register the product within 30 days from purchase.

^stalky, does it work the same way in the US? As in D2D replacement policy?
It's slightly better, they send you a new drive without you sending in the defective drive first.

^Never had an instance when WD shipped a defective drive as a replacement - did you come across one sawmill? AFAIk one gets a new drive as against a refurb in case of WD. Seagate sends certified repaired drives at times.

Seagate though does exactly that!

not exactly as awesome as it sounds..
you need to be an eligible credit card holder.
i think the cost is deducted before sending you the drive and credited back to you account on arrival of the drive you sent..(if under warranty and not declared void during inspection)

in general, the RMA is same as D2D for WD ..that advanced RMA is an option offered and not a standard service.

I was referring to India as well :)
The registration requirement is only for the extended warranty. The standard warranty is serviced by the retailer/distri. Zotac directly handles the extended warranty for which they require registration.

I used to have a Zotac 96GT till last year :)
