you can always go for the cabby if you like it. but think twice before you choose an smps. the whole system depends on it. if it is incapable of supplying right amount of power then you risk loosing the whole rig mobo, cpu, gfx card ... everything. the generic psu-s are risky, so we reccomend a aftermarket psu even if it is not high end. i guess you can get dependable psu-s ~1.5K. tell ur dealer to take out the psu from the iball cabby and deduct some amount (~500 if u are a good haggler) from the cabby price, invest that in the better smps. it will cost u ~1k more but u will have peace.

I have another query.. :)

Is it possible that because of some fault in the SMPS my PC goes off for 2 secs and restarts on it own. Sometimes when it stops i just touch the CPU fan and it starts again. Can this issue be linked to the power supply????

If yes then i'd just like to change my Mercury power supply ( i i just read on its box that it is 300 W) and see if the system works fine. Then no need to upgrade also. :)

My usage is for internet & MS office .. and when my PC is working it has sufficient power to handle everything. So i'd like to test with a new power supply (suggest models plz for p-iv 2.8 mhz, intel 865gbf) ... In case if problems continue and I upgrade then will i be able to use the same new power supply in the new PC ???

auto restart can have many reasons, smps may or may not be responsible.
the interesting part in your case is that sometimes just touching the cpu fan seems to start it again :S . i would recommend reseating the processor and heatsink before you go for a psu upgrade, this may solve ur problem as well.

Surely go ahead and give it a try.. Buy an okish power supply that can cater to your new system too

What crap?okish PSU?

Go for coolermaster 460W which i suggested...

Is the coolermaster 390 W @ 1600/- ok??

I'm also planning to take a dual core 2.2 Ghz @ 3700, Gigabyte mobo @ 2650, 2 GB Transcend Ram 800 mhz @ 1600

Looking at your use get the following AMD configuration (since you'll watch movies) :

Processor : AMD X2 4800+ = 3.1K

Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H = Rs.3.8K

Ram : Transcend 800Mhz 2gb = 1.25K

HDD : WD 250gb SATAII = 2.3K

Cabinet : Zebronics Bijli = .9K

SMPS : Powersafe 400W gold = 1.2K

Get it assembled from Prime for free or 500 bucks.

They'll deliver it to your house at 100-200 bucks more.

Best of luck now.

Think the 390w should do the job, provided you don't added any more peripherals/components,esp. a graphics card!
