Raise minimum broadband speed to 2 Mbps: Microsoft

I think now the "broadband" stands for anything above 256kbps.

this is the part that is truly sad. it's embarrassing that the indian govt. defines broadband as 256kbps. just a couple of months ago there was some scandanavian govt. that made 1mbps internet access a basic human right by law for all it's citizens. and here in india, the number of people who have that kind of internet will be a small fraction of 1%

^ Why would they do that ? Improving broadband speeds isn't their responsibility .

+1 Higher speed connections would only mean greater number of downloads of illegal copies of M$ products like OS, Office Suite and Dev. tools like Visual Studio and stuff.

By 2015, I hope the Broadband scenario would've changed dramatically. After the nationwide launch of 3G services and Wireless Broadband access in coming years, the stiff competition itself would force the hard-line based ISPs to boost up speeds and decrease costs as by that time users will have more options. Heavy bandwidth users would naturally opt for wired broadband access while casual users will go for wireless access as it would be an easier access setup for them. This type of division will eventually cause ISPs to divide bandwidth too where normal users could happily surf Net on their EV-DO/3G(HSDPA) based connections whilst gamers and download junkies will relish on dedicated hard-line based connections with low latency and more bandwidth.

But then again these are my thoughts, a common user who is technically educated whilst the policy makers are Politicians and M.B.A's who don't even know how to create a dialer for a connection :p

I think we ll get 2mbps for under 1k within two years .

i believe the same. so pessimistic people saying 2050 for 2mbps broadband, lol. im pretty sure byt then india will surely have affordable 32 mbps speeds! lmao.

With everything moving to the cloud MS definitely wants higher speeds (including upload speed, hence the argument against asymmetric speeds).

I hope TRAI addresses the FUP issue in addition to specifying the upload speeds as well.
