I wanna get 512mb ddr400 for my system. i have two vacant slots in my mobo. shud i go for 2x256mb or 1x512mb? i'll go for hynix chips since the previous 2 modules are both hynix. plz suggest.

also, one of my friends wanna get a dvd-rw. i know everyone of u'll be suggesting benq 1640. do we have any other option? also can 1640 write on any generic media normally available? also wats the approx. price of dvd-r and dvd-rw disk? all these my friend wanna know.

i wanna know how much time it takes to write a single layer dvd? also, can 1640 write dual layer dvds?

thanks in advance.

Since you have dual channel capability, it is best to get 256x2 and maintain it. Also go for either Simmtronics or Zion ram as both have a 3 year warranty.

1. as bf1983 & masky already pointed, go for 2*256, or sell your 2*256 & go for 2*512 twinmos, that way you would have 2 slots empty & later add more if you want ;)

2. benq 1640 is the best, it will write to generic drives but how safe your data is another question, for more info about what media to use & prices go here
http://www.techenclave.com/forums/benq-1640-cant-seem-find-media-64797.html

3. writing speeds supported by benq are :: 16X +R, 16X -R, 8X +RW, 6X -RW, 8X +R DL, 4X -R DL, 48X CD-R, 32X CDRW, 48X CDROM, 16X DVDROM
media supported :: DVD+R DL 8.5GB, DVD+R 4.7GB, DVD+RW 4.7GB, DVD-R 4.7GB (closed session), DVD-RW 4.7GB (closed session), DVD-Video, DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18

yes it does support dual layer dvd's.

I would suggest selling off your existing 256 x 2 and get 512 x 2. Twinmos, Hynix, Trancend would do..

For the DVD-RW don't look beyond the 1640, its perfectly fine with all media :)
