PC Peripherals RAM and server loads

Hi,

Had a quick technical question about the effect RAM would have on server loads. Take a forum the size of this, for example, and let's say it's on a dedicated server. Processor is a P4 2.8GHz and the memory is 1GB. Would it be of any benefit to have 2GB of RAM or more, or would this be overkill.

Thanks in advance :)

Its always good to have more RAM for servers, always better.
But also depends on the number of loads.

I dont have the exact idea if 2 GB is overkill on a certain load, but depends on load.
if you think its more there is no harm in having another gig more.

maybe some other members can shed good light on the exact load balancing :D

A Server running 1 website, doesnt require too high a config.

Even 512mb ram is more than ample.

1GB is more than enough

GoDaddy.com, hosts about 50 - 100 shared sites on Celeron machines with 2-4 GB RAM.

I think, that should saw enough.

The difference between 1 GB to 2 GB would be obvious only in very resource intensive tasks. I dont have any experience with web servers and how resource intensive they are, but we use 1 to 4 GB RAM on our machines for different development and debuging tools we use. The difference between 512 MB and 1 GB is quite dramatic while using Window XP and Windows 2003 Server for these applications. With 2 GB, the performance improvement is not so dramatic but still quite substantial still. Increase to 4GB will not yield in any more performance gains and it just adds the ability to run resource intensive applications without going out of memory too soon.
