PC Peripherals RAM upgrade query

ok, i'm on a AMD64 3000+ with a asus K8N mb...now currently i'm on 256 DDR ram 400mhz.
I'm planning to upgrade my RAM by adding another 512 DDR 400mhz.
now my question is,...i'd herd from some ppl that you cannot add two RAM sticks of different memery. now is this true, cuz as far as my knowledge goes...if the speed of both 2 sticks is the same, i2 400mhz, i shudnt have ne problems upgrading my RAM of different memory.
please confirm my doubts....as RAM prices have really dropped and i hav to go shopping :ohyeah:

If they are of Different speeds(like 400/333) they both run at 333, and also they will run at a relaxed timing. They will run No prob ;)

Well but if the timings are a bit different then it might not run at those rated timings and also as hooligan mentioned, they will run at 333 MHZ or may be 400 MHz and at relaxed timings like 3-3-3-8

You won't have any problems if you add a 512MB stick. There are some issues regarding matched pairs in P4s and socket 939 athlon 64 chips since they are dual channel. However your setup is single channel. So no issues.

Things are difficult only in dual channel. For single channel setup on either nf2/nf3(like the one u have),most good ddr333/400 should work well. But u can only run it at the speed the lowest module will take.Eg. if u have one stick at 333 2.5-3-3-7 and the other at 400 2-3-3-6,both will work at 333 2.5-3-3-7.That said the a64's memory performance with even ddr 333 is very good.(sometimes a64 boards default to 333 mhz using certain memory types/combinations)

You could always sell what ram you have and get 2x 512 mb ddr 400 sticks. You can get for as low as 2.2-2.3k. This way you can use the ram when you upgrade to platform that supports dual chanel.
just my 2 cents ;)

On a side note,it seems ram prices never really dropped in Delhi.I think that vicious body of illiterate dealers DCTA must have a hand in this. :@
