Remember the Zalman 5.1 Surround Headphones? These headphones packed in six discrete speakers to deliver 5.1 channel audio. Despite being liked by critics and gamers alike, the trend of headphones incorporating dedicated channels never really caught on. However, Razer has resurrected this mad concept to deliver "true" positional audio with the Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset.
Razer Unveils Tiamat 7.1 Surround Gaming Headset
Named after the Babylonian she-dragon, the Tiamat houses a total of 10 drivers, five in each circumaural ear cup. 7.1 surround sound is delivered through two centre channels (for each ear), a pair of main stereo channels per ear, surround left and right, rear surround left and right, and two large drivers for the subwoofer channel. This is the most comprehensive separation of multi-channel drivers that I have witnessed in a portable audio system yet. Keep your eyes peeled for a review to know how well it really works out.

The headphone is complemented with a slick control unit sporting two rotary dials that allow discrete control of surround channels. The inline unit adjusts audio levels for each speaker, as well as bass depth, microphone controls, and surround options. The unidirectional mic incorporates noise cancellation for interference-free transmission, while being retractable for easy storage.

Going by the official renders, I was almost tricked into believing that the Tiamat sports transparent driver enclosures. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. If true multi-channel audio is your calling, you can carry around your own 7.1 setup for $180 (Rs 8100 approx). If you're on a budget though, its cheaper cousin, the Razer Tiamat 2.2, sports four channels (including two subwoofers) for $100 (Rs 4500 approx). Both headphones are expected to hit shelves in the last quarter of this year. Razer's rep has informed us that the Indian release will follow within a week or two of the international one.

From Engadget :
Is the new Razer Tiamat the first true 7.1 surround sound headset, as the company claims? Maybe, but more impressively, it's the world's first set of cans with 10 discrete drivers -- that's five in each ear. The left and right ears each have three drivers dedicated to that side, and both pack a "center" channel and a subwoofer to round out the required eight lanes of sound. Most surround sound sets call it a day with eight drivers but, surprisingly, the two extra speakers here don't add much to the cost. And, for the control freaks, there's an in-line volume remote that lets you adjust each channel individually. You'll find PR after the break and the Tiamat 7.1 on shelves in Q4 for $180.
