Re-issue of passport - how long?

Just realised while planning for my vacation that my passport is about to expire at the same time :(

So here is my question: how long does it take for passport to get re-issued under general method (no Tatkaal). Inputs from Chennai would be great, since that's where I plan to get this done.

I checked the other passport threads on TE, but they are all for fresh passports, not re-issues.

TIA!

Procedure is same all over India.

Basically these days the entire security check procedure is done again so its almost same procedure as fresh passport. At least that was the case when I got mine renewed last year. Forms are available to download online. Download it and fill it up properly, and go to passport office and submit it with required documents. There will be security check where you will have to go to the police station with the required documents (Address, and photo ID proof is required ) when you are called. You must visit there within the specified time period as otherwise police station will simply send your documents back to the passport office.

Dont bother with the agents. The procedure is very streamlined these days. You should have your passport within 1-2 weeks after police verification is complete.

Entire procedure takes less than a month. But if its about to expire, get it done now.

^ Thanks :)

What I remember when I first applied for the passport ten years back is that the police came home for "check" (read cash pickup :D). Isn't that the case now? I mean we now go there and deliver it?

They will still come home to verify your address. But I got my things done without paying single penny here. Maybe it had to do with the fact that the havaldar which came to our place knew my father (old patient of his).

But you still have to go to police station with your documents and submit verification form (you will find this in xerox shops near the police station, its their mini business :P ).

Let me see how it pans out here. Sarkari things are so random and unorganised, that even bribery doesn't seem to be a solution :(

well actually the timeline is a little more spread out than what shripad told, atleast over here in Delhi. It takes anywhere between 2-4weeks after poilice verification to get the passport.Overall it takes around 2 months over here for the whole process, that is provided your police verification is done ASAP.

Has got me worried now :( 2 months would be a dampener. Is there a way to have the police verification happen quicker?

My dad has applied for renewal of his passport and its taking ages.

The main time consuming part is the police verification. They take their own sweet time.

Its been two months and my dad has not received his passport yet.

Two months is way too long after police verification to be honest. Unless something has gone wrong somewhere in the process. What does the application status say?

Hmm... Guess I will have to check with folks here also to see what they have to say about the time it takes. If I don't get encouraging responses, might as well have to go the Tatkaal route.

I guess he is saying that the verification itself hasn't happened.

OK so I applied online - only good thing so far is I atleast have a fixed time to appear at the Passport office with my documents. I hope the process is smooth thereon.

you can track the status of your application online.

If it has been 2 months, his application has probably been rejected or is put on hold for one reason or other ( they really nitpick on the documents these days, if your xeroxes are not clear or there is typo on ration card or residential address proof etc. they will not complete the process ).

Happened with my sister. She is studying outstation, and her passport didnt come. When we approached the passport office, we were told that as she is studying and staying in hostel somewhere else, she will need to complete police verification at the place of her college. Her passport was renewed only after that was done even when her permanent address has not changed and she came to mumbai for police verification. But as they ask where you are studying / working etc, she had to disclose those details and her application was put on hold for only this reason.

Same is the case if you are working outstation and spend most of the time in other city.

Or if you missed one document or was not able to produce all documents at police station or you missed the police verification (when they come home to verify your address ), your passport will not be issued.

He will get better idea when he checks status of his application online on the status page of govt passport office site.

LOL, thats what I thought but when I went to the office on allotted time, there was just 1 counter for accepting online applications with atleast 1.5hr line.Whereas there were a lot more counters for general applicants(get the form from there, fill it up right there, get a Rs.1k DD and submit it).I was Pissed cus I went there on allotted time and I had to wait for ****ing 1.5hr.:\

Does Chennai have the new PSK thing? i.e Passport Seva Kendra.

Applying for reissue has been a pain in the a$$ for me. At last did that couple of weeks back. My acknowledgement shows that it has been 'granted' and my police verification is supposed to be 'Post police verification' i.e verification doesnt have to hold back issue process. But I already got the call from local police station and still I dont have my passport (officially, it should be issued within 3 working days excluding date of application :@ ). Im talking about normal process according to pasportindia.gov.in

Bit OT from main query and sorry for hijacking the thread, but i have a query regarding 1st time issuance of passport.

My fiancee has got a SMS on her phone which says

Verification report of your passport file No. XXXXX is sent to passport office, Worli. Vide OW No. XXXX dt 25-08-2010

Now after this message how much will it take for the passport to actually come home and does the post man bring the same ?

She had applied for passport in end of July 2010.

Damn. However, what I am more concerned about is the time to process. I don't mind waiting even for a day in that queue provided the 'online' applications are atleast given a small priority over the manually filled ones, due to obvious tracking reasons. However I hear all applications now in Chennai have to be made online - not sure about this part though.

Where does it say 3 days for a normal process? I was actually trying to get the timelines from the passport site for a regular process, but couldn't find one. Can you share the link please!

@OP By any means if you are from West Bengal specially Kolkata...then please relax for 3-5yrs. :)
Haha, I know. If it was Kolkata, I would have first shifted elsewhere, stayed there for a year, and then applied for the passport from that area. :P

Passport Seva Portal

You have to scroll down for the expected time for dispatch. Again its for Passport Seva Kendra's only (AFAIK, its been started at very few places including Bangalore RPO). The application form has the same information in the instructions.
