So does this mean that 2ns party - direct-contact heatpipe cooler's are useless ?

Lastly , are the above cooler's same as "air-coolers"

His assumption is that the CPU die area will only be as big as the black square portion in the image. So the other 2 heatpipes in the side aren't making direct contact with the CPU die.

Yes direct contact heatpipes are also used in air coolers.
 
Intel is Intel for a reason , I mean it has the reputation because It has hardly failed to deliver ! . For me they are not so silly that they will not go back to something that worked rather than wasting their reputation for a silly thing like the IHS . May be they are just experimenting and stuff , but in the end am very sure , Ivy Bridge would easily out do the Sandy bridge counter parts in almost all aspects except for the inherent drawbacks of the tri gate design . If not then I would be pulling my hairs apart for all the time wasted in waiting for the damn Ms Ivy - no sweet poison
