Hi all,

I have been out of touch with linux from past 6 months :(

Getting a new rig exclusively for linux.

I think there have been lots of developements in linux in past six months.

Please recommend which distro is best right now.

I was big fan of ubuntu in good old days.

I am counting on good old friend DarkStar :)

My top 3 choices in order are Ubuntu (GNOME), openSUSE (KDE) and Fedora (GNOME) :)

Just make sure you don't get some wierd hardware that has problems with Linux... you should be fine then...

Ubuntu coz it's "Clean and Simple". I am running it now on my desktop, laptop and tablet pc.

openSUSE coz it gives you that "power user" feeling :)

Fedora coz it's more on the cutting edge and has GPL-fanboy mindshare...

@Dark Messiah: You'll always get varied answers to such a question. Each person will post their own favourite.

What I would say is, first shortlist a few distros based on recommendations and online reviews etc. Then once you get your new PC, invest some time in trying out your top 3 - 5 shortlisted distros before settling on your own choice.

PS: You ubuntu-os blog is dead? Can't access that link...

+1 this :) Since I have being using debian based distross I am pretty familiar with it and will recommend it righ away ;) So go for Gutsy its gr8 ... and don't forget to try this out http://www.techenclave.com/forums/pclinuxos-remastered-103696.html its sure is gr8 ...I will recommend you to have 2 distro installed say Ubuntu for permanent and for learning Suse or Fedora or PCLOS :ohyeah:

Edit : Do check my sig for latest customization guide :P

Ubuntu, SUSE, Mint in that order :)

I will not recommend Linux Mint if you got Ubuntu installed ;) Either Install Ubuntu or Mint :P both are same as Mint is CC of Ubuntu with loads of s/w installed :P

Just replaced Ubuntu Gutsy with Mandriva 2008....

way better performance than Ubuntu Gutsy....things start like a breeze....compiz fusion also workng smoother than Ubuntu....

only one bad....package management....nothing beats synaptic.....

^^Ofcourse, synaptic is possible on Mandriva but he meant the package library for Ubuntu which is unbeatable!

worked with Mandriva just for hours....

it couldn't update itself properly.....this thing really disturbed me....when a distro can't upgrade itself without hassles, how can i rely on it in long term...

also as i said previously software installation on Ubuntu is unbeatable.....Mandriva din't has MIT scheme in its repo....

reinstalled ubuntu gutsy....
