DVD Writer - LG Sata OEM

3. Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)

Monitor

GPU

Keyboard + Mouse

4. Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.

CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 635

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-UD2H AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard (TheITWares - One Stop for all Gizmos!AMD Motherboards)

4GB DDR3 RAM probably Corsair.

SMPS if needed.

5. Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component

No, this would be final at least for coming 3years.

6. Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)

Kolkata

7. Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market

No

8. Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware

Programming, I'll be running IIS for ASP.NET, Apache for PHP, Glassfish for JSP, Oracle(the most important, and the reason I'm changing this rig), MS-SQL, MySQL,

Gaming(A Little, I'm not a gamer), Photoshop CS5, Flash CS5, Dreamweaver CS5

Download rig, but not 24x7 operation

Watching HD movies sometimes

9. Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

For motherboard I'd prefer Gigabyte, though you can suggest others, and for HDD it must be WD, Seagate is a strict no no for me.

10. Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?

Well, I try games on sundays, and I'd like to play latest games, COD, Splinter Cell, NFS, Blur, Alpha Protocol etc. But low / med settings would do for me.

11. Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage

Gaming - No idea

Desktop - 1440x900

12. Q: Are you looking to overclock?

No

13. Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?

Windows 7 64/32 bit

Linux - Ubuntu and Arch.

I intend to buy this on Feb '11. And probably suggest me a switch, as I won't be selling my old rig, so I need a switch for monitor, keyboard and mouse.

What are your views about getting the new Hexa Core ones(if comes within budget), in this way I'll be more future proof. As I'm sure quad cores will be EOL this year.

If u r lucky u may end up getting an Athlon II 640(if x3 440 unlocks into x4 640)

Add a 2GB GB stick later coz i really can't fit 4GB RAM in the above suggested config... To add a 4GB stick u've to either skimp on other components or u have to increase ur budget...

If u really want 4Gb RAM then buy FSP Saga II 350w which will cost u 1.5k... By doing this u wud b able to save some 450 bucks to invest in the RAM...

I don't think u read my whole post. I said Seagate is a strict no no for me.

So if I get SMPS, I need to low down my RAM.

Thanks, I also think getting a good PSU is better, I'll buy another 2GB stick after few months.

BTW do you think all those programs will run fine under quad core??

Now the case is, if I install oracle my whole PC becomes of no use. Hell lot slower.

Yeah a Quadcore CPU is more than Enough for todays needs but some ppl prefer going wid a hexa core CPU coz they want their rig to last a bit more... :P

Athlon II x4 640 can easily handle the stuff that u r gonna do... :)
