Ok guys,

We @ V-Street are about the Expand the game servers from 1st November.

Well be adding Source, Quake 4 and keep the already running CS 1.6 Servers.

My question is Whats the best Server Configuration to run 6-8 Servers atleast on the Machine.

I dunno much about Servers so please help me out.

4GB Ram is a Must ofcourse.

Which proccessor and which Motherboard??.

Also it should be available in the Indian Market.

Case, Rom Drives, Floppy Drives and Gfx Card and all that doesnt matter.

Moolah is close to 40,000.

Remember only Proccy, Mobo and RAM.

Edit : I was looking at a Xeon 3.2 Ghz with Asus - NCCH-DL Mobo and 4GB Transcend RAM.

Thanks in advance...

Why not something opteron based... Also a good case is a must for a server... And dont forget some good HDD on raid...

Xeon is a waste... Hot, slow and eats tonnes of power. The electricity bills will add up if you keep it on 24x7 as a server would. Get an opteron or a64. I don't think you can fit 4GB memory in a 40K budget.

Also in the case of an Opetron, you will need ECC memory, which is quite expensive, unless of course you are able to find an Socket 939 based OPetron.

4 Gigs of DDR Ram will cost you about 20k atleast. And I speak from experience Golden, wen i tell you that I personally know someone running 5 Source servers on a system with 2 Gigs of Ram, and they work just fine. And Opteron > Xeon any day.

^^ i second that. 2 gig of ram should be enough for source and 1.6 servers. about quake4, one cannot really say before it actually releases. and like others my choice would be an opteron any day

I'm interested in a 939 Opteron, if it's available in India. Is it yet? Will it ever?

So can you recommend me a Config???

Mobo CPU, Ram... Which ones??

Wolfff, whos running those?

And Server Power Consupmtion aint a problem. Its in a Server room in net4india hq @ mumbai... lol.. We dont care about thier power bills :D...

Ok, ive read reviews, all say Xeon is much better for Multitasking and apps.
Is every1 hes biased towards AMD?
I need a Non-Biased opinion plz...

Windows 2000 NT.

We wont change to Linux.

Please help. Were upgrading soon. Very soon. We do not want to buy the wrong parts.

Well if the win nt copy is non legit, you might get into serious trouble if nasscom gets to know...(the legit copy of NT would cost you more than the hardware itself) do remember that.

Check any article in
http://www.anandtech.com/it/

I don't see them recommending a Xeon anywhere.

Hehe. Its Legit dude. Dont worry.

We have taken precautions. Even all our servers are Legit. Even though Kawabonka.com has a Non-Legit one running.

We may run a Non-Legit Quake 4 Server, depending on how many people play the game.

^^ Kawa doesnt have any non legit servers running. Ricky wont allow that for sure..

OPteron is a much better deal, atleast for game servers.

Alright.

So should i go with the Opteron 250 or 252? Or something Lower will do?

Well go for 2 GB RAM Atleast. I was thinking 4GB is a must for many server to run though.

I meant that He doesnt use Steam-Authentication.. So that Non Steam users, that is cracked users can join.

*Bump*

Anyone? Please some more help?

I realise only 242 and 246's are available in India. So are those good enough?

andee admin of sgwg :cool2:
246 may not be enough I think sgwg servers are using Xeon

Right now, it looks like this.

TYAN S2875ANRF Dual Socket 940 AMD 8151 ATX Server Motherboard
ASUS K8N-DL Dual Socket 940 NVIDIA nForce4 Professional Extended ATX Server Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-7A8DW Dual Socket 940 AMD 8131 + 8151 Extended ATX Server Motherboard

AMD Opteron 246 SledgeHammer 800MHz FSB Socket 940
AMD Opteron 244 SledgeHammer 800MHz FSB Socket 940
AMD Opteron 242 SledgeHammer 800MHz FSB Socket 940

According to preference.

What say?

I Just got info. from andee on www.sgwargames.net.
He uses, dual xeon 2.6GHz with 1GB Reg ECC RAM with 80GB IDE HDD.
He can easily host 10 CS servers of all sorts, but max simultaneous users can only be around 100-120 before everyone gets lag.

What about Xeons now? Andee has good experience with em.

Im looking at these too...
Intel Xeon EM64T 2.8 Nocona 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 604 Processor
Intel Xeon EM64T 3.0 Nocona 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 604 Processor

ASUS NCLV-D Dual Socket 603/604 Intel E7320 Extended ATX Server Motherboard
TYAN S2676ANRF Dual Socket 603/604 Intel E7525 SSI EEB 3.0 Server Motherboard
Intel SE7320SP2 Dual Socket 603/604 Intel E7320 ATX Server Motherboard

Again according to preference.
It will be Dual Opterons or Dual Xeon's in any case.

Get a couple of 244 CPUs and the Tyan mobo. There's an even better Tyan board called K8W-E Thunder based on NF4 Professional. But it is damn expensive. Stay away from the asus board as it is unstable. Maybe its now fixed with bios updates but every review of the board said it sucks. No idea about gigabyte.
