Recommend Thermal compound for laptop

Last one is good. You would need like how much the black powder size is on a match stick. And press on the HSF. It shall spread.

^^ HSF - Heat-sink-fan. You can't decide on the tube size, the company releases certain quantities in tube / tub.

The Artic Silver 5 tube ~ 4.5 grams of TIM (Thermal interface material) in it is just right for your laptop, avoid the Cooler Master HTK-002 not a good TIM. The Arctic Silver 5 needs some time to cure, and perform optimally.

^AS5 is electrically conductive. If you are not careful and the paste overflows, it might short circuit any adjacent components around the chip/exposed core. Get a tube of MX2 instead.

well i can be careful

today itself opened the laptop completely leaving heatsink

fan was making noise

is still making noise

seems requires a change

so was thinking of putting thermal compound

It still has stock thermal compound from 4+ years

tried disabling fan using i8kfangui31_x64 but driver was not signed so install didnt go through

will try using dseo13b now

@gannu

MX2 Arctic Silver

its not their in any of my links ?

can you post a link for online purchase.

After the recommendation i got Cooler master Thermal Paste HTK 002 as it was available cheaply and locally

I applied it temps went to 35 to 45 C

generally after few days they started again rising in ranges of 65 to 80 C on normal workload

had to change the fan so had to open up again

thought had applied less compound so did that again

What i observed was that compound was wet even after 10 days

isnt it supposed to dry off ?

Applied again , everything fine temp in range of 35 - 45 C

but same story again

now after simple reboot without any thing open temps are 65 -80 C

Start in range of 78 C and with reboot complete fall to 65 C

15 + days are over after second application

so what should i do ?

Can you post a pic of your thermal compound ... how it looks after you take it off to check next time.

Ok will do that

But i dont intend opening it anytime soon till i find a solution to this

if its related to my incorrect application of compound then will open it and put a new layer

Yesterday only i used MX2 for a gateway laptop that i had repaired. Like asingh said, a small should do good. Later I experienced more heat being dissipated out of the aluminum fins. Is it a good thing? :D

Either the TIM is doing a great job and dissipating heat well, or the core is getting really hot. Probably the former. Check using a thermal monitor software.

guys i am sure TIM is not working

If i leave the laptop in a room without any fan/cooler/ac it automatically shuts down after sometime

crashes i mean

i dont know the timeframe as i am not in the room

only thing running on laptop was one torrent downloading

please recommend me some solution

should i put TIM again

have already changed twice in a months time

It may not be the TIMs fault at all, it could be the seating of the heat sink. Or u used too little or too much. Get a thermal monitoring software [realtemp, coretemp] and post the temps near crashing. It would be helpful for a diagnosis.

If possible take apart the heat sink, clean it with iso propyl alcohol and post pic of the amount of TIM and the seating here.

ok will do that

i think its too much

i applied too much

when i opened it i saw dry TIM outside the CPU lots of it

so thought it should spill and dry there

well lets see i should open it today itself and post pics

when it crashes i am not in the room

dont want to get sorted out in a room without fan/AC
