this might be a great option if the phone can be hacked for local use.

The unlocking software is scheduled to be released on new years eve, so you'll be able to use it on any network, however you would still have to pay contract termination fees to AT&T

Cancellations/Early Termination Fee: An Early Termination Fee may be assessed against you in the event that you terminate your Wireless Service Agreement and/or selected plan before the expiration of its term. The fee will begin at $175 per device and decrease by $5 each month for the term of the agreement. You may cancel your service, for any reason and without incurring the Early Termination Fee, within thirty (30) days of signing your Wireless Service Agreement, PROVIDED, however, that if you cancel service you will remain responsible for any service fees and charges incurred. If you cancel within three (3) days of signing your Wireless Service Agreement, you will be entitled to a refund of your activation fee, if any. If you exercise this option, you may be required to return devices and associated accessories purchased in connection with your Wireless Service Agreement.

iPhone Terms and Conditions | Wireless from AT&T, formerly Cingular

So basically you have to pay $175 (Early Termination Fee) + $36 (Activation-if you dont cancel within 3 days) + $70 (for the cheapest billing plan)

So wat will the price come to approx according to you guys ??
well, as far as i know, the i phone cant be bought without a SSN. now that wont be easy to get from anyone. so that finishes off the question of pricing

You need someone who lives in the US with a social security number and proof of residence and other details, the iPhone 3g can only be bought with a 2 year contract, but you can temrinate it by calling AT&T on the last day of the first month to cancel your contract. You'll have to pay $175 as a cancellation fee and the first month's subsciption charges.

So it works out to be $99 + $175 + $60 = $335 total

Now for the real bad news - According to the Dev-Team iPhones which have been updated with the latest firmware (2.2) have a very slim chance of being unlocked...since every update also makes changes to the baseband and we've had 3 updates since the iPhone 3g was launched.

So its a complete waste of time for anyone who lives outside the US.
