A friend of mine uses his computer to watch DVD movies. He gets DVDs of movies from different places. His system has a Samsung DVD writer and he says the software permits him to change region only 5 times before it will lock.
Is there any software he can run or anything he can do to make his system Region 0 and watch any movies in future without the fear of locking his system to one region only after 5 changes?

Ask your friend to visit this page: The Firmware Page :: Index

download the correct firmware hack (make no mistake here!) for RPC2( this will permanently make the drive region-free(this will reset the region-code back to zero every time the PC is rebooted). with RPC1 hacks, you'll need a software to bypass the region-code .
here is another guide to make you understand: The Complete Region-Free Guide | Articles - Digital Digest

Warning: if your friend is not comfortable with hacking his dvd drive, then do not try! but IMO , its very easy :)

Thanks thexfactor and broar94. I shall give him the information you have provided and let him take it up from there. The AnyDVD solution seems to be the simple, straight forward solution for a novice user. Is there any freeware available to do the same thing?

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that he will have to first figure out if his drive restricts the region or it is only the software. Only then can he decide to go the RPC2 or RPC1 route. Is that right? If so, how can he find that out? Will it be in his drive documentation or is there a list available?

Go to drive manager->dvd/cd-rom drives/ and right click on your drive and click properties . on "dvd region" tab , you'll come to know how many more changes(region) he can make before finally his drive locks up to the last selected region. after that , you can't change anymore.. even if you re-install xp, you can't evade this. its hard-wired lol..

So if this is visible in the properties, does that mean the drive restricts the region and not the software?
