Remotely access my Laptop

I am currently in Shanghai and have my Laptop in Mumbai. I want to access the contents of that machine from my machine here. I do not intend to download anything from my home laptop but want to check a few things and hence want to remotely access sitting here over the internet or whatever the method is available. Please suggest what can i do ?

Will remote desktop work ??

Any pointers are highly appreciated

Some Info:

My Laptop Here:
Windows XP Pro
2Mbps/600 Kbps internet connection

Laptop at home:
Windows Vista Home Premium
2Mbps/256Kbps MTNL Triband connection
and
Windows XP Pro
System is set for dual boot but XP is less preferred in my home laptop.

Teamviewer - Free, more useful when u dont have a static IP.

If you have a static IP at home for the laptop - Then you can RDP or VNC

RDP over Hamachi will be suggested - Avoid - It is very very vulnerable to hackers.

Your typical issue may be that the laptop may not be assigned a public IP directly, so if u try to find its inet IP and RDP to it, you would be trying to connect to your MTNL ADSL router. Best for you is teamviewer.

Thanks axeman, can you suggest some tips on using the team viewer. I mean it i like this

1. I and my brother both connect to internet.

2. He does an IPCONFIG and tells me the IP ADDRESS

3. I connect to that IP using team viewer

Correct me if i am wrong

Cannot access the teamviewer website now as it is blocked in office :@

Will check at home

One more thing, does the other computer also needs to have TEAMVIEWER installed ?

Both you and your brother install Team viewer.

Team viewer would generate an ID and Password, give this to person who wants to connect to your computer or vice versa and you are connected.

Oh.Ok Thanks Roxtin for the tip. I hope it should be easy for my brother to realize this. He is quiet a noob with computers (except net surfing). Will need to give him instructions.

Its very easy, he just has to install the setup with all default values and select "non professional/private use" while installing and just has to provide you with these 2 values.

Both need teamviewer installed. You do not need IP of any of the computers.

Teamviewer gives a code and a 4 digit password for each machine. Just need to get that over chat from the person on the other side.

Cheers :D

+1 for Teamviewer. A brilliant workaround tool for remotely accessing a comp from elsewhere and pretty much user-friendly too. :)
