Graphic Cards Removed the thermal pad on my 6800GT.

I cleaned my comp today and when I took apart the graphics card, I applied AS5 on the core and some other goo on the RAMs.

then on the heatsink, there were thermal pads to make contact with the RAMs. NOt the GPU.

I scraped it off.....

now, the heatsink's copper surface is not making 100% contact with the RAMs.

What do I do??

Any solution for me?? Any risks in running the card like this temporarily obviousy as I am looking for a permanent solution.

Am not oc'ing obviously.

i had done that first day i got the card :D ..... anyways in my case HS was making a good contact with the mem chips so no troble ...... in ur case i think the solution is the thermal pad ..... or get a new HS :)

Man the core is always higher especially the 6800GT because of the heat spreader and all (even the FX series had this)...The pad is basically to make contact possible....

Now can u get fresh thermal pads. I haven't seen these around here but know they are available

Now still think that card will last....we'll see :bleh: like I said

^^ i don't think the card will die coz of that ..... anyways the thermalpad not transfer the heat but they make the situation worst ...... i think without thermampad it will work fine ....

Looks like you don't have a choice.

1. Get a new set of thermal pads and fix them on the HS.

2. Remove extra metal from HS in those areas where there is not enough contact for the mem chips.

First one is much easier. If the thermal pads happen to be too thick, the HS might not make proper contact with the core. If thats the case, remove fine layers from the thermal pad until there is good contact overall.

Ok.... thanks for your replies.

I spoke to Funky and he says that DDR3 memory wont burn. It will just throttle down when overheating.

As a precaution, I have kept an 80mm fan blowing air directly on to the memory.

Where in Bangalore can I get an NVSilencer 5?? Please helllpp!!!

Why do you want a NV silencer when you can get away with thermal pads... Ask around in local market or mail ITDEPOT ppl... they will be able to help you with pads... i will look here if anything is available...

well it wont burn for sure. I have operated 6800GT without ramsinks for a while and nothing happened. Do we have ramsinkson all 6600GTs? we dont, and the memory speed of 6800Gt and 6600GT is same 1000Mhz DDR.

So there is nothign much to worry about.

U are 100% right except its 256 bit memory..... I was hopin to scare him a lil longer

Well Vandal..... You failed. Coz I spoke to Funky before I saw your first reply in this thread :P

@Funky --- thanks for making me aware of my true friends on TE :P

Just check that the thermal paste didn't spill onto the "Green resistors" around the core.

If the paste is dielectric, your card will join mine :bleh:

LOL GDDR3 hardly produces any heat. The chips on my X800XT run at 1180MHz 24/7 without much issue. Those don't have ram sinks or any sort of cooling. They are still only slightly warm to touch :P.

Sorry Kiddo that u don't consider me a friend....:bleh: God what a loss, I am shaken and in tears...:P no really...

you do get thermal pads in the market. it is quite cheap.
dont go to any computer shop go to shops that deal in ic's etc..... most probably you will get one which is bigger in size than ur ramchips. use scissors to cut it to an appropiate size .....

if you are "brand" freak then i have a few pieces of exact fitting thermal pads. it came off my former radeon x800xl card. make me a "branded" item offer and its urs ....:D
