Got a flat tyre this week on my Civic. It's the stock Michelin Energy MXV8 on 2-year old car with under 12k on the odo.

For now the tyre is fixed up by the local tyre-wallah today, will see how long it lasts. The guy himself wasn't so confident.

Is it enough to get it fixed at a tyre shop or is it recommended to get it replaced?

If I should replace it, is just the rubber portion available to replace on the existing alloy rims or do I need to purchase a whole new tyre?

Called up Deccan Honda dealer, he quoted Rs 5.5k for a whole new one of the same MXV8 model.

Suggestions?

As long as it isn't a sidewall rip, a good patch up job should hold. Check the sidewalls thoroughly for any damage in case you ran the car with the flat tyre.

if you're getting a new tyre, you need only replace the rubber portion

Also, I'm surprised MXV8s are still available. I thought they went out of production long time back.

Unless you damaged the rim by running it flat, just the tyre will do.

You can simply switch the spare over to do duty as a main tyre, if it is the same size. Due to differential wear rates, the driving wheels should have tyres with similar wear.

In English - if the puncture was in the front tyre, switch the rear tyres to the front axle, put the repaired tyre into the boot, and run the spare as one of the rears. If it was in the rear, then just replace it directly with the spare.

+1

Get the tire repaired from a reputed tire shop using mushroom patches - those thread type inserts for repair will also do but the mushroom patch is more durable and foolproof.

Thanks for the inputs. Yes, it was the left rear that went flat. I guess I'll just get a tyre shop to swap the rubber of the spare with this one - the spare is also a Michelin Energy MXV8 though the rim is non-alloy.

Any pointers for a decent tyre shop in Pune (Fatimanagar/Wanowrie or thereabouts) that can do the job? Also, where might I try to get fresh rubber and how much it might cost?
