Dear Gamer Gurus,
Will someone please write up a guide on how to use the Orange box/Steam in simple English without taking anything for granted for the ultimate n00b like me. :ashamed:
Should contain steps/instructions starting from point zero- ie- insert DVD first and follow instructions or install steam first from the site or get a steam id or what? :S
Please take into consideration that many are first time users of an original game pack and do not have a steam id or anything like that. :P
Please. :cool2:
Lotsa first time users of the Orange box asking me, who is no better than what they are. :P
Thanking you'll.
Regards,
Bikey/Rishi. :hap2:

p.s. I hope the mods can sticky the proper guide in the gaming section- atleast for sometime. :)

You can create a steam account before hand.
Keep the internet connection on and start the setup. That is all what is needed. The setup will handle the rest.

To activate a game select "activate a game/product" option under the games tab.(steam client).

You can assign different games to different game accounts as well. Cheating online results in an account ban and you lose all the games in your account.:)

If you have any problems you can approach Steam Users Forums - Powered by vBulletin for solutions as well.

damn going legit is so much harder :(

wish it were as easy as installing the jack sparrow ;) versions

I don't have anything Steam related installed right now. Will the Orange Box give the option to log into an existing Steam account and do what you said before it starts installing all the new games?

hmm download the steam client, enter your credentials, login and update it. then you will have the option to add your games like i mentioned,

i am not sure how the orange box would behave on a system that doesn't have steam already installed. it's reasonable to assume that it would prompt you to download/install/update steam anyway.

Its really easy .....

1. Download , Install Steam, create a steam ID.

Then as mentioned before

2. Go to Games >> Activate a product on steam

3. Follow the instruction and put in your Product Key that came along the Orange Box.

4. It will ask you to insert the Orange Box DVD.

5. Once done the Orange Box games will appear in the Steam game list.

6. Now you have the option of running the orange box installtion also where in the GCF will be copied to your steamapps folder in your steam folder.

7. Once all that is done you will notice that the game are not at 100% , well thats cause updates for the game has been released. Simply right click and select Update.

8. Once all thats is done, double click to lauch the game. In game if you take screenshots using F5 then you can view them here
Steamfolder\steamapps\UR_STEAM_ID\GAMENAME\GAME_Folder\Screenshots\

eg
steamfolder\steamapps\jacob\Half-life 2\hl2\screenshots\

Well it install steam in the process and the client updates itself. But its advisable to run the installation from DVD cause then it will copy the GCFs to your steam dir, then once done all you have to do is just download the updates after the game release.

FULL GAME DOWNLOAD = 10+GB plus depending upon what game u choose.
Install from DVD + Download just updates = 10MB download

If you have not done it till now don't worry, you can run the setup again and it will copy the GCFs.:hap2:

well here are the steps for all the people who have never ever used steam
Steps:
1.Buy the original game from a good retailer not any local shop keeper.

2.Remove Plastic carefully without damaging your case.

3.Check for the content mentioned on the box that you got.

4.Check for the CD key/Activation key (it should have 5 sets)

5.Make sure that there is no trace of steam in your system before you insert the CD/DVD.

6.Insert CD 1/DVD 1.

7. It will ask to install Steam click on next and read the agreement (i know its boring but make sure u read at least once)

8. Steam will be installed and an updating window will appear. Let it update on its own do not click anywhere let the updating go on(it will take time depending on your net speed).

9.A window will appear asking Create a new steam account / Log in steam with existing account.(Do the need full but do not close the window)

10.After logging in steam will ask for CD key to be entered do that and a window will appear and ask which game to be installed select which ever you want and click next.

11.The dvd will copy all the files to the steam folder(usually it will be saved as .gcf format don't worry about that leave it as to how it is)

12.The dvd will start the copying work and ask for DVD 2 insert that and continue the copying part.

13.Once the copying is done it will install the game that takes around 15 minutes if u select the entire orange box (i.e. all 5 games)

14.After the installation is done steam will update the files on its own so don't be in a hurry to play the game sometimes it takes 1 day if u have bad net connection (let the updating happen do not rush or you'll land up crashing or freezing steam if that happens the again the same procedure from the start)

15.After updating click no the icon on the desktop and start playing the game :)

thats all you need for steam.

evener i can search it myself :)

bu ti need half life part 2

stream code :ashamed: can any oen has pls pm me or gift me :)

One more thing i forgot to mention the game doesn't depend upon the computer or the external IP its all on the account
even if u install the game at your friends place and authenticate it and install the same copy at your home with that same Steam ID you can run the game easily.
soo all those who install the game in the office and was having second thoughts can install the game in office and again install the game at home and play without inserting the cd key again

woohooo my first legit game :D

damn it dvd 2 is not reading

I have heard a lot of issues with the Orange Box DVDs. Looks like the Rs. 999 price tag has resulted in crap DVD media :( BTW, the DVDs have been replicated in India, i think this explains the bad quality media.

One OT Query: Suppose i install Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and enter the serial number and i can run the game properly. Now, i want to associate the game with Steam. Can i enter ETQW's serial number in Steam and associate it with steam? I am asking this as ETQW is available thru Steam too.
