Hi Friends,
After a long long wait, I have got a chance to buy a new monitor for my system. I do not know much about HD movies display except that their resolution is quite high. So my guess was that buying a HD monitor would be enough. But now when I read few threads here, I came to know about a HDMI port & cable. Some googling revealed that HDMI cable is required to transfer high defintion content. I had upgraded my CPU in 2010 but I am almost sure that it does not have an HDMI port. I am considering Dell ST2220M. But it does not have any HDMI support. So if any of you can provide me some information regarding this then it would be very kind of you ppl. Alternatively a link would also be helpful. My main motto is playing 1080p movies. So far I have not tried to play 1080p content so also tell me if I want to play a Blur-ray movie then will I be able to play it in the absence of HDMI cable & port?

Yes, you can play non DRM stuff thru VGA also. Until my system got an upgrade to HDMI, used to connect to my TV using VGA+RCA cables for audio.

VGA has support for 1920x1080p@60Hz.

DVI is the exact same as HDMI but HDMI sends audio signals also. Only useful if there are speakers on the monitor itself.

DVI = HDMI - Audio

VGA can also play full HD but the general image quality is lower than that of DVI/HDMI.

The Dell ST2220M has DVI connectivity. So currently that is a good option for you. :)

Thanks Vivek for granting the info. Now I am bit relaxed but want to read further about playing HD content with no loss. Can u tell me whether DVI cable comes with monitor or I need to buy it separately?

What vikram said is true, dvi is better than vga but i could not notice the differance between vga and hdmi on my tv.

Yes a DVI-DVi cable has to be bought seperately. you will get one for about 200bucks.

Hi Vivek, I have a motherboard GA-M61PME-S2P (Gigabyte) which does not have DVI/HDMI port so how can I play HD content? I am planning to add a HD67770. will that make me watch HD videos?

use a VGA to DVI converter provided you have a dvi port for your monitor , but buying a graphics card will be a better idea for better playback of HD movies ,.

Ya I have a monitor which has a DVI port but will VGA to DVI converter enable my desktop to play HD videos? If I add a graphics card then how would I connect my monitor to the DVI port on card.Sorry to ask this stupid question but as I have not used a graphics card so far .

btw I hav almost decided to buy a HD 6770 & a PSU. My mother board specs says following so I guess I will be able 2 add this card on my mobo.

1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16
1 x PCI Express x1 slot
2 x PCI slots

Yes you can add the card to your PC you need to insert into the PCI Express x16 slot , if your hardware is good enough yes the it will enable you to play HD videos/Movies , whats your hardware , my Core 2 duo machine without any card some time ago used to run HD movies on KM player(7-8gb rips) but buying a card is always going to be a better thing .

For connecting your DVI port to the card just buy a DVI cable , orient the pins accordingly and insert into the dvi slot on your graphics card (the DVI port is wider than the VGA port) and the other end of the cable similarly connect to the monitor :).

The dvi port will look something like this http://www.itsfixed.com.au/uploaded/images/client_added/dvi_d_socket.jpg.

Thanks sukant, for clearing my doubts. My rig specs are following - amd athlon II x4, 2 gb ram and giga byte GA-M61PME-S2P which has onboard graphics (64mb shared ram). Also tell me which(company) HD6770 card gives best performance as there are a lot of companies who manufacture this card and the suitable PSU too
