I think you might be able to restore the backup, but you will have to reactivate your windows. Also, if you want it to boot directly, make sure you restore it on the same partition number as the previous hard disk.
You can restore if you have upgraded your system except motherboard and graphics card. If motherboard/graphics card is changed, it wont boot to the desktop.
My current Vista installation has been ported from an ASUS AMD 939 A8N-E to an Intel chipset based Abit IP35-E and then to my current Intel DP35DP board. I have no problems with running this installation of Vista.
Everytime I changed the Boards I had first uninstalled the old Boards chipset drivers when the old Board was attached and then I attached the HDD to the new Mother Board and then I installed the new chipset driver.
