I had made a sale for a product and it was received by the buyer. However, due to some problem, the product needed to be replaced. The replacement was sent out as well. Now the buyer needs to return the defective product to me. Since there was no terms set earlier about who would pay for the return shipping, I am in a fix. The product was for about 600/- inclusive of shipping. I already paid Rs. 270/- to ship it earlier and again I had to pay 270/- to ship the replacement. Now who should pay for the defective product to be shipped to me? I am at a total loss if I am made to pay.

Please give your suggestions as to what you would have done had you been in my case. Would it be ethical if I ask the buyer to pay for the return shipping? What are the standard policies for return shipping?

First of all TE is not a sale making forum nor this is ebay. Whatever deal you make and how to make the sale/help in replacement is between you and the buyer/seller. You speak to him and make the decisions accordingly.

But my question is, would it be ethical if I ask the buyer to pay for the return shipping? If you were in my place, would you not feel pinched and at the same time, if you would be the buyer, would you agree to pay for the return shipping considering that amount of the transaction?

50-50 would be fair IMO

I was thinking on the same lines even though I would be at a net loss in the deal.

Please keep the suggestions coming. This will be helpful for future trades as well. I have learnt a lesson to make sure that I mention the return shipping terms clearly in all future trades.

See sumit, problem is I have received the problematic product, its not damaged in transit or its not give problem after usage(ultimately I have purchased the problematic product), but when it was not working while I receives it, is it a responsibility of the buyer to spend some more for the same, if problem arises after few days it can be shared but when you are sending a product to a buyer, it is the prime responsibility of the seller to see that the product is working fine before sending. So as a buyer its complete responsibility to take care from the seller side.

Everyone assumes that seller will send working product, for that only buyer is responsible for item charges and shipping charges, but if seller is careless about sending the product in damaged condition, its complete responsibility of seller.

If you feel you are at total loss, you should check the product before dispatch, as a buyer I can feel that I paid the amount for the product 2 months back and still I am not able to use the product. What should I feel from my side as a buyer.

I had a similar doubt as well. I had bought a camera from ebay which came with a set of batteries and charger. Now the charger turned out to be broken, so the seller said he will send a new charger. But he wants me to send the old charger back to him. Should i have to pay for this?
