Review: Sony Ericsson w910i

Sony’s w910i is catching lots of attention when I went to Alfa 3 weeks ago. I was choosing between the K850i and the W910i. The guy took the w910i box from my hand and given me a dummy piece. After 5 secs I decided to take the w910i but the same box was sold off, as also the one. It seems that sonyericsson has really cashed in its marketing strategy by using dancers and Hrithik Roshan. Well, it seems that the marketing tactics paid off, but at Techenclave, it’s “the ride, not the rider†that counts. I decided to read a review on TT and couldn’t myself but laugh. The reviewer claims that the functions taken time to respond and other things that I have to say in 2 words-its bullshit. I know I shouldn’t have, but I knocked some sense in them. I didn’t care if they read it or not.

Here it is-the real review from one of the best and the real deal reviewers in this site, setting the records straight and breaking the politically incorrect reviews to dust-Sorcerer’s review on the real w910i:

[BREAK=The Package]

Sonyericsson now loves to showoff-literally. And it shows. Sonyericsson has started to giveaway the m2 card reader along with the phone. The top part of the phone is just thin plastic and a box of all the regular accessories with it. There were two colours for this phone, an extremely bright “nail polish†red (as I would term it and a matte-finish body “noble blackâ€. It is a great thing that you can see the phone before buying, but alas, it’s not a secure package. Don’t squeeze it in your bag and ride off. The phone is expected to be protected by the plastic. Not going to happen. I really wish if they had put a cardboard protection but it did not. It is safer to put this in your pocket while traveling rather then re-packing.

DSC01341_800x600.JPG

Sonyericsson has always been good to put out a sticker and answer all your questions about the accessories, month of import and the MRP. Unfortunately, not many follow the MRP rate, even on the “white†market. The details on the box does with it should do and it did.

These are the usual stuff which I get with the phone. But wait??? What happened to the stereo speakers? Sadly you don’t get“better on onboard speakers†stereo speakers. I really wish Sonyericsson has got their act together and given the stereo speakers with all the walkman phones. The m2 card reader is a nice touch, but it doesn’t compensate for the speakers now does it?? Even for a premium price of 17k with Bill. Sony, if you’re reading this-this doesn’t do any justice at all-for you AND for us.

So I am holding the phone. Initial feel, the body is sturdy, strong and made with rock solid materials (as in to hold-not to drop). This is something that Samsung needs to implement on their sliders with a strong body. Samsung started releasing plethora of phones which looks the same and the features…pretty much the same expect certain differences. Considering the fact that Samsung does want to look different, I decided not to comment on their looks and ergonomics. When I was given SGH 600 (something like that) to write a sample review for a job at CHIP some days ago, the phone had potential, but Samsung lacked the finishing touch and certain tweaks. Sturdy slider, but a weak and oily body (gloss would be an understatement). This also shows that Sony does research on other phones and starts jumping in all types of phones, but using other phone’s cons as a lab rat.

So how are the buttons?? Starting from the top, there are 2 shortcut buttons next to the speakers and the Conference camera. By default, the one on the left shows the last picture you have taken and the right one goes to the pictures folder. This is a great shortcut key they have implemented in a correct corner. Since these are firm push buttons, don’t even doubt you can press those buttons while talking. The direction buttons and others are pretty strong as well and I doubt they will loose its strength that easily even after constant rigourous use. But the numpads seems to be having certain issues alongwith improvement.

The bad part is that it will take more amount of strength to press the buttons compared to other sliding, swivel and clamshell phones. Even with t9, you will take time to finish typing a sentence for a sms. I wish I could say this that it seems to be “unique quality†in my piece *sarcasm*, but others seems to be having this issue. I know sonyericsson’s firm buttons are great to use and not that difficult to press, but alas I couldn’t say that for the number pads. However, best part is, all the keys are comfortable large according to their usage.

The walkman button is placed up. Is this a bold move? Yes- But at the wrong time. The reason??? It’s the Shake It feature. When I seen the Hrithik Roshan’s hand, I thought I just have to shake it bit hard and it changes the song. But then I figured out that you need to hold the walkman button. In case of 580i, it seems the walkman button is on the side and for w910i, it right on top. For me, it’s an odd feature. I would use this bit more then rare times if it was on the sides. But I found it uncomfortable if I hold the button on the top and shake it. This is when I thought; they should have given a wrist strap with this phone, for there are many people who might just shake it too hard without pressing the walkman button.

DSC01370_800x600.JPG

Now I had to read the manual for this- no biggy. I thought it was automatic. The reason I made an assumption is because the walkman screen gets tilted when you hold the horizontal or vertical position automatically. The automatic tilt screen is a treat for people watching those small videos, but the shake control looks more like a gimmick. However, considering certain features as redundant is user’s preference. So just like many reviews I have written, I decided to consider it as user preference rather then a gimmick. In my opinion, I wouldn’t use it. This is something I would consider good marketing tactic for mp3 player like sansa shaker-if they had a shaker.

Now one more feature which was bundled with the shake it feature-and its called sense me feature. This feature works only when you set and transfer music using the media manager software which is bundled with this phone. I don’t think that should be a biggie to an extent. Basically-rather then making a playlist based on musicians, songs, albums- it sets according to your mood. Any mood-whether you are happy as a bumble bee or sad as a….mime? This is an interesting and simple feature on this phone. Is it a gimmick-wouldn’t consider as one.

On the right hand side, there is the volume/magnify controls, M2 card port and the camera button.

DSC01347_450x600.JPG

Whereas on the right, they left it with a charger/headset/usb port.

The Camera and the screen:

DSC01354_800x600.JPG

The camera is a 2 mega pixel but without the auto focus. There was a time I would have considered this as “not necessary†for SE phones on the eve of walkman phones, but you need atleast the macro and auto focus. I wouldn’t be surprised if the cybershot series has an anti-blur on their phone-or even plan one. We all need this on the camera phone. The 2.5 digital zoom doesn’t compensate for the loss of auto focus either.

DSC01363_450x600.JPG

The screen is bright and has a very good colour reproduction screen. Sonyericsson screens really impress me every time I see them. I hope they continue to follow the “It’s a sony†bandwagon. After all, I was very disappointed at their w610i cellphone to a whooping extent. The phone has 240x320 pixels and it is 262,144-colour TFT screen. Amazing- yes. Amazing enough to see a movie-not yet, but they are getting there. Maybe Sonyericsson might do that on a rumoured Bravia series phone. I wish I could confirm the rumours, but I am ramming my sources unfortunately- no Real reports yet.

The Back Panel

backpanel.JPG

Thank you Sony for not putting the camera inside the back panel where the part is hidden when the slider is closed. I believe that a slider phone should do when one doesn’t need to type. This is one of them-taking pictures. Samsung constantly makes this error (in my opinion- it is a serious design flaw) by putting it on the hidden panel. The small dot next to the camera is a red light and it lights up when you switch to video mode. Below you see the speakers. It is clear, but it is not loud enough. This is a con because I might get better phones with speakers. It is also a con because it is premium priced and they don’t even bother to bundle the stereo speakers. There is a small but a good lock for the battery panel. During charge, the piece doesn’t get heat as a microwave oven; it doesn’t get heat at all infact.

Slimness comparison

DSC01128_800x600.JPG

For a slider phone, it’s amazingly thin. The phone size is 3.9 x 2.0 x 0.5 inches and it weighs 86 gram. The battery is the best I have seen so far. The standby time is 350-400 hours and Talktime is upto 9 hours. The battery is thin and small but diagonally wide.

The M2 card reader

This little device makes the card into a flash drive.

flash.JPG

This doesn’t compensate for speakers. Though I was curious how good this m2 flash reader can be. At first I thought the card will just go in, but alas a part of the card is sticking outside. I am surprised to see this flaw with a company like Sony Ericsson. This is a great m2 card reader. I made a small competition with a buffalo flash drive 1 GB and here are the results:

BUFFALO.JPG

It does compete well with the flash drive. It works great. Best of all, the piece doesn’t get the heat even if it just sits on the usb port for a long time. If someone needs a flash drive and doesn’t use the card on the phone, this is a great little device with a good speed for 2 GB.

Internet software

DSC01373_450x600.JPG

The default internet software with sonyericsson phones was very irritating to me. It goes immediately to the default homepage and that is why I am using opera. But this default software is a treat. Although it might not appeal to Opera mobile users, it has certain functions like auto zoom.

[BREAK=Writer's notes and conclusions]

Writer’s points and conclusions:

I have done some digging and I got to know something great from my friends around. I have a friend working as a customer care for 3g at Malad. He told that many people complained about the heat issue from the battery, slow interface, sense me and shake it function not working at all, music and other data getting corrupted. I read the T3 UK edition I read that the version made for Orange UK, Vodafone UK and O2 UK has got bad products only on the first shipment. From my other sources who imports grey market items told that these phones are normally from companies which bundle with sim cards. And then it hit me. TT was testing a grey market item. I checked around the CNET forums and others, and they said the same thing. In one of the reviews, it was mentioned that only the phones which was bundled with the sim card had an issue which was fixed after recalling all of them. But don’t be surprised if the grey market items are those defect pieces. This phone is worth 17k at Alfa, Mumbai. Grey market might be for 1-2k less. But it is not worth the save.

=

Conclusions:

Good phone, but very expensive. They given 2GB and the flash drive, but doesn’t compensate for the stereo speakers. Under powered 2 mega pixel camera, even for a walkman brand. This phone gets 3 out of 5. If this phone costs 15k when the product launched, I would have given it 3.5 and if it had a stereo speakers-it will get a 4. I doubt they will put autofocus and a better 2 megapixel resolution-for now.

@ mods: Getting too much error for positioning paragraphs and photos FROM PAGE 2. The forum codes seems to be visible and not taking the necessary step :(. I wasnt able to locate the codes when I was trying to re-edit them.

sorcy, your reviews have been great uptill now when we used to judge you as a inhouse reviewer but now since you are a Professional Reviewer with a great company there are certain pointers that hit me while reading it as a user reading this for a review of the phone from a professional reviewer

1) Dont hold the phone in your hand while taking pics of the phone(doesnt look professional at all) till the time you are trying to show the holding of the phone itself.

2) While reviewing a camera phone, there should be some shots of the pics taken from the phone itself showing the quality of the pics in different scenarios.

Will point out more if you do want some critics but nonetheless its a great review of an average phone(i am fan of camera phones and hence this comment)

LOL Darky. I was waiting. I wanted to ask you on msn when were you going to put it up-but you didnt come online and it was half made :P

How is the audio quality? Mobile review have murdered this phone in their review saying audio quality isn't good. What is your opinion?

I am interested in buying this phone, though not immediately. Waiting for a price drop!

Like it mentioned. Phone speakers are clear but low sound. The headphones give out a fair amount of bass and clarity like other walkman phone series headphones.

nice review mate. :hap2:
only one issue - the pics are a bit outa focus and most of them r dark. source of light seems to be far from the phone and to one side of it. so most of ur pics are having dark shadows on one side. :ashamed:
once u go pro u have to watch out for these small things dude! maybe u could up the iso settings to around 400 and play around with the white balance to get better photos?? :)

Low on resources. Planning to shift to the new place in 2 month's time. Low lightning on my room. But planning to make some radical changes on my reviews from next year onwards.
