Folks,

Got this USB dongle for a friend of mine who chose WIFI connectivity over wired for his home PC. A quick review:
  1. Works out of the box in Ubuntu 8.04. I am posting through the same.
  2. The package consists of device drivers for Win32 which I am sure would work and hence am not going to try with. (Hell it worked with GNU/Linux right!)
  3. Range is pretty exciting. Got almost full range across 3 walls about 30 feets away.
  4. This dude heat abit I guess depends upon proximity to the router. Hence advised to be kept away from closet.
  5. Yup connects at 54 hence is 802.11G

hey what is the characteristic of this USB wifi dongle?.. i am planning to convert my wired hathway connection to wifi for 2 workstations.. me a noob in wifi connectivity.. does it need a wireless router or something.. ??

I've been planning on buying a wireless PCI card one of these days. Sure, USB makes it really simple to use from one PC to another but how well do these perform as compared to the PCI ones in range and speed? The prices seem pretty identical. I was told that the D-Link DWA-510 PCI card is ~900-950.

How about a time on a 1GB file transfer test on that Pronet USB adaptor? Also, tell us how many walls in between the two machines.

wow..lots of attention all of a sudden. :P

ll let LT comment on most of the stuff.

@edrill: PMing u the dealer info in a while.

@backtoexistence: I think u can get away with 2 dongles to connect the PCs, but then u prob need the PC connected to the net to be switched on to connect from the other PC too. 2nd option: switch/router. Google or wait for others to post.

@cyberjunkie: get watever is cheaper ;) speeds 'should' be comparable. wait for tests.

Ohh yeah, its a WIFI Client, so it needs a server (router).

When I ran my test I moved from one room to another, while copying a 700 Mb movie. The speed was consistently 54 Mbps, however once when I went to a corner in a faraway room, the speed dropped to somewhere 24Mbps.

Wall count minimal: 2.

but how much time did it take to copy the movie? i suppose the speed u mentioned is the connection speed...but from wht i hv experienced on wi-fi connections is tht the data copying speeds r pathetic...let us know the time taken to copy the movie on 54mbps connection speed...tht will give an idea of data transfer speeds...thanks in advance...

Connection speed is the throughput speed. So it comes to about 6Mb/sec.
