Internet users have long turned to the web to find dates -- sometimes paying dedicated dating sites such as Match.com or Nerve.com. But when a serial entrepreneur with a peer-to-peer bent decided to enter the matchmaking business two years ago, he aimed at making the online dating game fun and free. The result is a new site called OkCupid. He likens it to a singles bar without a cover charge.
The big difference at OkCupid are the quizzes. Not the kind you took in Chemistry 101 -- the kind you find in Cosmopolitan.
OkCupid launched with a couple of quizzes written by veterans from TheSpark, but also lets users add their own quizzes. Now 20,000 of them range from titillating surveys that evaluate whether you prefer tempestuous ravens, muscular men or the girl next door to tests that profess to evaluate whether the taker is a geek, nerd or dork.
The quizzes don't help match you to a new date, though you can compare your scores to others. For actual matches, the site relies on a battery of 2,000 questions, also mostly written by users.
Users decide which questions they want to answer, how important the question is, and what their ideal partner's answer would be. They then can search for possible dates by looking for people who answer similarly. If confronted with a wealth of choices, they can narrow the field further by location, age and sexuality.
It's participation like that that's driving the site's growing popularity -- 300,000 active users in the last month. That allows the site to be run by just eight employees, who are paid through Google Adsense revenue.
