Laptops Right resolution for screen size

Most of the customizable laptops give the buyers a choice of screen resolutions., i.e. WXGA, SXGA, etc. I guess blindly selecting the highest available resolution may result in a display with very small fonts.

To ensure that a buyer doesn't buy a mismatching screen size and resolution, are there any guidelines for choosing the resolution of the screen?

Here are the video resulution standards

VGA - 640 X 480
SVGA - 800 X 600
XGA - 1024 X 768
WXGA - 1280 X 800
QVGA - 1280 X 960
SXGA - 1280 X 1024
SXGA+ - 1400 X 1050
UXGA - 1600 X 1200
WSXGA+ - 1680 X 1050
WUXGA - 1920 X 1200
QXGA - 2048 X 1536
QSXGA - 2560 X 2048
QSXGA+ - 2800 X 2100
QUXGA - 3200 X 2400

I wouldn't recommend anything above SXGA+ or WSXGA+ for a 14" or 15" display. But I've seen an HP 15.4" professional laptop (for designing etc) with a WUXGA display and fonts were hardly readable.
