I would suggest invest more in the router/extenders this peiece of equipment is going to outlast everything else that is going to be connecting to it.

yeah thought the same last time and got a cisco wrt320n which lasted 3 years only.
So im looking for a rugged problem free equipment.

Had to do a 5000 sq feet appartment in mumbai recently, cost about 18,000 one router and a repeater, everyone is kicked about the network now, Setup streming TV too, about 2-8 devices working at any one time, including streaming tv

to cover 3000 sq ft duplex, you will need a repeater, doubt if any single router can do the job.

Have more or less covered 4000 sqft duplex flat with a single Asus RT N 16. But I must warn you there are some spots where the coverage is very low. This is more to do with the fact that the router is on the ground floor at one end of the house as thats where the internet connection and modem was setup. I guess if it was a bit ore central, then it would be able to cover the whole house.

At that price must be one of the AC ones. Give more details about the streaming tv, what resolution files and what clients.

Cheaper would have been attaching a second wired AP for equivalent if not better performance.
Course then you have to run a wire and thats too much hassle for some.

Heh, basic web browsing and a central location can give good coverage at 2.4ghz. had recommended that exact router in another thread to cover a 3000sq ft office. We've yet to hear which model was chosen in the end if at all.[DOUBLEPOST=1363350615][/DOUBLEPOST]

Are you able to place the router in a central location ?

Will be using a couple of laptops, an ipad, and 3 mobile phones.
What apps will be used. basic web browsing or more.

Where the router is located will give you the best VFM.

@blr_p ...the router will be placed near the staircase of the duplex which is more or less the center of the house.

i dont need a router which supports nas functionality, wont run a download client on the router, wont transfer files over router, dont game online etc...in essence i need a basic router with gooood range.

Casual browsing over ipad and mobiles like youtube etc. I might play multiplayer games on ipad sometimes.
And ill be using a cordless phone at home which uses 5Ghz if this is imp to mention.

Can you put up a floor plan. Mention where the router will be placed and the areas you want coverage. Try and indicate distances as well so we get an idea how far away things are and what obstructions if any are present.

We've never seen to your house so we're blind here.

Range to where ? only a floor plan will tell us.

Fairly basic usage in other words.

Have you tried inssider on the laptop or android device to see how many networks are in your neighbourhood ?

Have you ever had a wifi router in the same location before or will this be the first ?

@blr_p ....try to picture this...

Main entrance in ground floor opens into foyer from where staircase S1 leads to first floor which has a kitchen, master bedroom, living and dining halls. From first floor staircase S2 takes you to a small intermediate floor where the router will be placed(star in pic). There is a window(rectangle to the left of star) from where the cable comes in. From this area staircase s3 leads to first floor which has 3 bedrroms and a small hall.

Distance btn star and corner of master bedroom would be 50feet max. Similarly distance between star and remote place where i need coverage in first floor would be 50 feet max.[DOUBLEPOST=1363407164][/DOUBLEPOST]yes i have used a router earlier cisco wrt320n. Had a decent experience with it. Decent coverage but used to have weak signal from bedroom2 in first floor.

You use the past tense. Is this the router you are using presently or not ?

What i want to know is whether you presently have access to any wifi router to do tests in that house.

Which wifi client (laptop or mobile) are you using in bedroom2. This room I presume is the only room in the house (or are there other problem areas as well) where you want to get a better signal.

Will be using a couple of laptops, an ipad, and 3 mobile phones.
I take it the laptops (windows or macbook?) have wifi. Are any of the 3 mobile phones android.

InSSIDer

Get that program and install it either on the laptop as well as android devices and walk around the house with them.

How many other networks do you see ?

There are only 3 channels (1,6,11) available on the 2.4Ghz band. What you want to know is if any neighbouring networks are already present on those channels and what their signal strength as measured by InSSIDer is.

If they are 80+ to 90 dbm you can ignore them. But if they are 50-70 dbm then make a note of which channels they are on and tell us.

here u go.

Nope Im not using that router anymore. Last week the power light of the router kept blinking continuously and laptops and phones are not able to get any signals. So scouting for a new one.

No other router available other that wrt320n.

Vaio Laptop with windows 7. Yes this is the bedroom with lesser connectivity.

Both laptops are Windows based and wifi enabled. And the three phones are Nexus S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 5.

There are no other neighboring networks around my house.

Nope no networks around whatsoever.

This indicates the f/w somehow got corrupt or has not loaded properly.

Did this blinking issue happen as a result of a firmware upgrade or out of the blue ?

Lets see you can get this router working again :)

Did try to hard reset the router but the problem persisted. Let me try this way. This happened all of a sudden.[DOUBLEPOST=1363514914][/DOUBLEPOST]Installed the latest firmware and the router is working fine. Thx a lot @blr_p

Very good, i suspect a power fluctuation might have caused it. Is the router on a UPS ?

So now we are left with your original issue.

How to improve reception in bedroom 2 ?

What does inSSIder report in dbM for your wifi network when you are in bedroom2.
