I am kind of a newbie when it comes to hardcore networking. SO i need your help in deciding on something :

I have TATA Docomo Broadband at my place and it comes with the el-cheapo wifi router with it. I use it to access internet on my computer via wired Ethernet to access internet on my laptop, phone and LG SMART TV via WiFi and also to stream movie content via Plex Media Server (Basically XBMC) from my computer.

Now the problem arrives in the last part of my usage where i am trying to stream HD content to my 42" TV. . understandably the TATA Router chokes pretty badly on any rip which is 1.5 GB +. So basically i need a good (VFM) solution in which i can use it to connect to internet as well as broadcast HD b/w data via WiFi.

I have three questions here :

1. Which router to go for ??
2. Can i get any router configured on Tata Broadband ? Will the engg. from Tata do it ?
3. My parents are going to the US. Is the technology and products better/cheaper there ? If so, Ill order from there itself.

Anyone with personal experience can please guide me ?

Quite a lot of routers are cheaper in the US, you can get a good deal from there.

If you have a high budget, this is a great choice: Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N65U Black Diamond Series Dual-Band Wireless-N750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, 2 USB 3.0 SharePort

you can also use it as a torrent downloader and media streamer via a connected HDD without keeping your PC on.

Mid Range: Newegg.com - Linksys EA2700 App Enabled N600 Dual-Band Wireless Router with Gigabit

and if you are looking for something cheap,
Newegg.com - TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 Wireless N600 Router, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

^^ also supports media streaming.

What about the part of running Tata Broadband ? Possible on any router ?

Can you do it yourselves ? or do you need their dufus engg. to come ?

do you have ADSL or cable broadband? if its ADSL, you'll need a modem as well. Its fairly easy to configure it yourself.

Tata broadband will run on any router; especially the ones you are looking for. The router auto-detects everything as long as the modem is set-up correctly.

Run an ethernet cable from your router and attach it to the TV. This will give you THE best performance for everything you need.

Otherwise get a big USB flash drive, copy over files from your PC and stick the flash drive in your tv. Or get a bigger external USB HDD and copy over everything and hook that in to the tv. Then just use your TV remote to browse.

If those are not feasible things get more complicated ie expensive and uncertain.

How far is the router from the TV and are there any walls in between.

Post the make & model# of the TV and the router.

I have the ADSL router in which you plug in the cable.

It has one jack for the LIne connection, Four LAN ports and Wifi.

Is it an ethernet cable? Then I think it should work OTB as my reliance did. However, in case of Tata Docomo which I have now, the modem gets an incoming RJ-45 cable.

Well the ADSL port takes the standard Modem Cable (RJ 11 if i am not wrong). So it is an ADSL Modem cum Router. I think if i buy some good router, it might solve some of the issues i am facing.

Why dont you drop by next time and have a look at it ? :)

Sorry, I've got an RJ 11 incoming as well. But my modem is a small tiny box, not a router. Only a modem.

In your case, you might have to pickup a modem+router - Routers - Buy Routers Online at Best Prices in India - Network Components : Computers | Flipkart.com

These are the ones available in INDIA. If i get it from US ? What are my options in the 40$ - 50$ Range ?
