Hi,

I am planning to replace my wifi router with the following setup. It will also serve as NAS and download rig.

Intel D510MO ~ Rs. 4200
iBall Nettop 009 ~ Rs. 1200
800 DDR2 1G ~ Rs. 1100
PCI Gigabit Ethernet(To connect to my desktop(on board LAN would be connected to my ADSL modem in bridged mode )) ~1000
8GB USB Flash Drive(For Booting) ~600
PCI express mini Wifi Adapter(To be used as AP - PS3 and Laptop) ~

1) My price estimates(taken from online) correct ? I would be buying it from SPRoad?
2) Any one seen PCI express mini wireless card(preferably N) in SP road or Indian online store?
3) Any other component suggestion instead of my selection? It should be cheaper and not power hungry. (Processor should be passively cooled)
4) Anybody used PCI adsl modem with Linux?
5) Anybody selling above components(seconds)?

I knew existing products in the market would be cheaper. I am building this just for fun :)

Some thoughts on your rig. And since you are doing it for fun and learning, Im throwing in a few options so that might interest you and you might read up to make the best choice.

You do not need a dual core Atom for this job, you need something that can draw even lesser power. A Single core Atom will save you money amd make no difference to a NAS or torrent. And while you are at it, it might be worthwhile to go for a DDR3 motherboard to keep your options open in the future ! The GIGABYTE GA-D425TUD is a simple board for this: Link and takes DDR3 and had a gigabit ethernet.

A VIA chipset is also a good option. Something like this board :. I remember that VIA had a board with two NIC outputs that was available with panache. Check it out.

Do not buy a PCI card for the gigabit ethernet. Get a simple USB adaptor for Rs 250 and use it to connect to your modem. Get a board with inbuilt Gigabit ethernet and use it to connect to the desktop or router.

And most importantly, read up on FreeNAS and use it instead of fiddling with your general linux. Check out my blog for some ideas on the same. Especially to use a CF card instead of the USB stick so that it does not heat up.

Random musings...: Build your own expandable NAS box !

Thanks for the "USB to Lan" idea, I will buy one of those.

I came across your blog when googling for "kill a watt india". Saw your NAS setup also, wanted to mail you about USB heating issue but forgot. I am not aware USB heating issue - any pointers?

About the software, I am thinking of Linux kernel(only necessary modules/driver) + essential utilities(add as needed) + webmin(for configuration).

If this turns out to be too much work, I will try FreeNAS.
