Hi Experts.
I have decided to place my router modem 4m away from my room and about 5ft. above the refrigerator.
My questions :-
1) Would i notice any speed difference or any sort of problem if i purchase cat
6 and rj-11 cable that long to connect ?
2) Its centrally located in my building, Is it OK for router placement ?

Thanks :)

Ahhh, after a long time a good question about placement of the wifi router.

The wifi router should be ideally kept above head, bit away from the wall. However you have to consider the sources of noise or entities that can absorb wifi radiation instead of bouncing them off away.

  1. Wall pretty near to the router tend to absorb them.
  2. If the refreigerator is at the center location then its really good.
  3. A refreigerator doesnt emit frequency in the range of wifi however if it has a microwave nearby (most probably will), then thats going to make it really weak.

So keeping on a height is a good decision.

LT: I place my router where I can see the lights from my desk, which for most Linksys routers is below eye level as the lights are on top and not the front. I also placed it right next to a bunch of electronic equipment randomly scattered around, and it still gets to my mobile phone three floors down (and it's not a fancy router either, just the generic WRT54 something without any external antenna) just fine.

Whole-house coverage with pretty much any modern router is not an issues IMO, irrespective of location.

Agreed, mine one is just 6 inches above floor, that too without antenna ( mine kid will end up playing with it, so I removed it). I too get signal 4 floors below on the ground floor. Having said that I have written what I had studied during mine days of research about wifi.

So coming back to the problem of OP, its more of try and test (yeah I know it sucks), but thats how it is. But one thing for sure, keep it away from the wall, it sucked during mine observation.

YMMV

Well, the refrigerator is in the center of my floor but in front the wall and the microwave is 5-6ft away from it. I was thinking to hammer a wooden tray 2 the wall which would be 6ft above the fridge and place the router on it . Now what is the solution to this ? i am totally confused.

@linuxtechie, do u get 100% signal all the time ?

Thats actually a good idea. About signal. Nope 100% is not received all the time.

oh ok ! so according to you and your wifi research, my idea should work right ? I can't place 6 inches or a ft above floor because i have deadly dogs :bleh:

Yeah thats should be fine.

sorry to join in late, but as rightly pointed out 'a bird's eye' approach to router placement does it best.

getting signals two floors up or three floors down doesnt matter, its the consistency for video streaming and gaming that has issues usually. ideally, the wifi router should look down centrally over the area it needs to cover for best reception. try and test placements on your topmost floor, incase in a multi-storied apt. and no, the distance of cat6 from router to pc, doesnt affect speed, if less than 90ft, any further and you need to add a switch.

hope this helps.

hey, I have a similar question about router placement..

I had the BSNL Huwaie router and was getting abysmal signal (wouldn't reach out of the mezzanine where it was kept so thought it was a router problem and switched to the Buffalo G125 router.. I also shifter the router down to about 8 feet of the ground, kept on a cupboard near a pillar..

My signal range has been increased, but i sill am unable to get good range ( reaches max of 2 rooms away, not more than that :( )

What could I do to increase my range? Cause In our other place, the router is kept on the ground floor and am able to surf on the 4th floor!

Ps, I should add, I live in an oldd house, madras ceiling (14 feet up :s) and with 3 feet thick walls... :P
