Got this sms from RBI:

Rs. 10 coins have been issued both with rupee symbol and without it. Both are valid. Accept them without fear. To knpw more, give missed call to 14440

So they forgot to stamp rupee symbol on the coin?

I dont know about other regions but here in rural Maharashtra for last 6-8 months there is a terrible rumor that Rs10 coins are discontinued as many fakes are circulating. To make these rumors stronger photos of Rs10 coins where the outer rings was detached from the inner surface were distributed. Slowly it spread to such a point that except for banks and govt bill collection facilities no one was accepting these.
My brothers faced this issue a lot at his store but he still accepts these coins but he has stopped giving it to customers as every time he does that he has to explain the entire story. And believe me with no matter how much proof or documentation you give these people they will never believe you but believe stupid rumors circulated on whatapp. <Insert Biggest Facepalm here> Most of the shops have completely stopped accepting the Rs10 coin adding fuel to the rumor.

Looks like the issue has spread to other regions and with more than 15 different Rs10 coins available it has only added to the chaos. RBI recently issued a statement on this and now they have started mass SMS campaign since last two days.

Funny thing. I called that no and it called me back and started blurting out all technical nonsense in English. Not sure how much that would help.

Story of few months ago, in Bangalore. I had couple of such ₹10 coins, someone gave, in my wallet.
And I gave one as tip to one of the car washing guy, and I received a weird look. He didn't want that. He wanted 'real' money. :)

btw, on similar line, what is the logic people not accepting torn notes?
(since shopkeepers don't accept such notes, even I ask to exchange such torn notes if someone gives me)

^ don't accept new notes either torn or defaced or with any damage or stains on them. RBI says it has not got go ahead from govt to accept such damaged notes for return. I had gone to a chemist and he returned a new 500 rupees note to me saying banks don't accept them if they have any damage on them. the note had some rust mark or something on it. i don't know how that note went away. it was in my wallet for a few weeks though.

For sure that, the fake currency people won't make coins. Not worth the effort and no big margin in that... Big value currency is ideal for them . They don't even fake rs 10/20[DOUBLEPOST=1517577584][/DOUBLEPOST]

Sadly this has been done with the Rs10 coin. There was a news report video on the same. it was found in WB coming through Bangladesh.

In Pune it has been more than a yr people not accepting Rs 10 coins. Here people decide within themselves what to accept what to not. Only public transport accepts them. Now this rbi shit might completely render Rs 10 note and coin useless here by locals here. Such idiots must be fined especially shopkeepers.

Does it not help if people threaten police action?
During demonetization, many bus and auto drivers were causing a ruckus if you gave then Rs. 10 coin. Most had to be threatened with police action and a few were actually taken to the police too.

Even after the automated message about 10/- coin, nobody is ready to accept it. Wonder what the government is going to do!!

Solution: Issue coins with NaMo's face on it. Everyone will take it.

highly un ikely. Recent govt actions have only killed honest tax payers.. I will simply stop accepting such coins :D:D

On a Humorous note, I shudder to think what will be their poll prank in upcoming elections . Their previous poll prank of #achedin is done and if this is #achedin what will happen when it comes to #burredin.

I am in Bangalore these days and no one accepts Ten Rupee coins. Plus if the currency note is old, they simply say no.
