Ryzen 4000 will not support 300 and 400 series boards

It appears that new Zen 3 architecture will only support X570/B550 boards on AM4 platform.

The X370/B450/X470 boards will not be compatible with Ryzen 4000 and effectively reaching EOL.

I'm sure AMD will rollback decision to exclude 400 series boards.

Lot of people bought B450 boards just because B550 boards were delayed. I'm sure AMD wouldn't want their ire directed at themselves.

This was to be expected after the B550 chipset was nowhere to be found even 6 months after the new cpu's launched, they are probably being pressured by board manufacturers as well since no one will be considering an Intel build for the foreseeable future, AMD has also decimated the used cpu/entry level market with the launch of the vfm 3100/3300x duo.
Intel fanboys who bought expensive new motherboards with every refresh are the ones making the most noise atm, at least AMD kept it going for over 3 years but the disappointment experienced by people who bought a 3600/3700 with a B450/X470 board is understandable.

I think a lot of people invested in B450 due to lack of B550 and in a bet/belief that they will be able to upgrade again to Zen3 in near future.
Some even paired it with lower end ryzen cpu to skip on Ryzen 3000 and upgrade later.
This might impact a good number of people currently on AM4 platform.

This !

Exact situation I am in. Last summer they did not release B550 chipset based mobos; due to this I only had option to get B450 chipset mobo - X570 is priced absurdly for what it offers and it's not mainstream board. I went with Ryzen 3 3200G to begin with. Plan was to get best VFM from last CPU genre of AM4 socket when they are launched and be set for good 3-5 years. Now, if AMD does not rollback their decision or at least leave this to be decided by board manufacturers, I am left with either Zen2 Ryzen 3000 series CPUs and possibly Zen2 based Ryzen 4000 series APUs. Not that proccies like Ryzen 5 3600 are going to obsolete overnight, depending on how good Zen3 performance comes out, this could make longevity differ of a system.

Issue here is not presenting full details last summer itself and coming out clear about EOL of B450 chipset. Mobo manufacturers even went ahead; created version of boards with larger BIOS size and advertised them to "accommodate" all future AM4 processors. AMD was still mum on this point. Looking in hindsight it feels planned move to rack in more moolah. If plans were communicated clearly, lot of people would have planned differently.

MSI confirms 4000 series support for 400 chipset boards. While Max versions of boards with 32MB of BIOS are easy to support, non-max boards with 16MB of BIOS would loose support for some previous gen CPUs and lesser fancy UI - their UI is already trimmed down a lot !

Honestly speaking do you guys think its a good idea to go for 4000 series?

Keeping in mind DDR5 will be coming out in 2021 with 5000 series I think its better to skip this gen from both Intel and AMD.

Not for a scratch build but for 1/2000 series would get good jump.

About DDR5, I have been reading that it could be delayed till early 2022.

Yeah I guess I was only considering my scenario as I have a 3000 series in lieu of the Zen 1 I had previously.

If you guys have seen GamersNexus' video on this topic it seems a bit gnarly as Zen1 and Zen+ can only work with 16 MB BIOS.
So the 32 MB BIOS chips (those on the B450 Tomahawk MAX) are actually partitioned into two 16 MB partitions.

If AMD supports Zen 4000 series chips on the 300/400 series boards theres always a risk that they might have to pare back support for Zen1/+ compatibility which will be another problem especially in emerging markets.
