Hello

Two Doubts

Doubt One:
The Confusion arises between the choice of these three G8 Products
Own S3 which makes me lean more on S5...But the panny 18 is also good ~28mm lens:ohyeah:

The price is not the barrier but like to stick to 22k else would get dSlr...
Can some one explain the pros & cons of these three....

Doubt Two:

Where do I buy the chosen one?

In India or get it from US or get it via my bro in China/HK/Taipei

What are the problems i have to face viz the Warranty hassles:@ & service dodo:@

Your help is required.

Ok, ill try and answer what I know -

The S5 is good from only a warranty perspective since it is not overtly overpriced here like the Panny. So get the Canon ONLY if you are concerned with warranty.

Since you will most probably be buying the Panny in grey, you can check out the prices from your bro and if they are cheaper, you can get the cam from there.

Also ask your bro to check it and test it first before buying.

By what I've read so far, and my personal short experience with S3... I'd say, that go with FZ18 out of those three. Both FZ are almost similar, except 10mp on FZ50 and 28mm lens on FZ18.

Like BF1983 said, if you're concerned about warranty then go for Cannon. If you're going for gray/import stuff, FZ18 is definitely better choice than S5IS. I recommended this camera to one of my friend recently, and after long debate (in his own mind) between P80 and FZ18... he decided to go for FZ18. :)

Ya that the answer i needed to convince my mind...After a year with S3 I wanted to go for the S5.....But fight erupted between the Panny & canon when i lay my hands on it

& about the second query

If i buy from amazon or Panny USA do i get warranty covered in India-International Warranty or should i buy Warranty coverage packages

I am really skeptical about warranty since I had a bad experience with Sony Cybershot series

Thanks for Fast Replies

Seriously, I have no idea about warranty thingamajigs... I bought most of my cams so far, in gray... and maybe I'm lucky, but I haven't faced any problems yet.

No idea either about Sony cybershot cams... or Sony's warranty. Although I've recently bought a low-end Sony camcorder (SR-42e I think), so if anything goes wrong I would get first hand experience of Sony's warranty. :)

No warranty if you buy outside India. However I'd suggest you upgrade to a DSLR. None of those really are step ups from ur current camera.

Yeh.. I would agree to that. Even the cheapest entry level DSLR will give you better result that those, compared to what these will give you from your current cam.

.... Unless off-course, budget is a constrain. Plus, you'll need to invest in decent superzoom (18-200/24-300) lens to compensate 18x zoom you will be getting in these cams (18x on FZ18).

No I am satisfied to the core with my S3.Myself getting a DSLR later this year

This I am buying for my cuz who is an amateur who has been into digital Photography with Coolpix cameras 3.0mp model.

He needs to pick up pointers using the above models or should i get him an entry level DSLR -Nikon Coolpix P 80 which i can get for 22k in India

I feel he will be uneasy with a DSLR

well guys i dont whether u guys have noticed but sony has slashed the DSLR prices in india the sony A200 costs just MRP24990 with lens .should be a bit cheaper in the grey markert and its the cheapest DSLR camera that has image stabilization.

Are you sure its soo cheap ? If it is available at that price, it is a decent camera.

The Sony makes sense if you require cheap tele lens (Sigma 70-300mm for e.g.) or want to get a IS 18-200 lens. For instance the Tamron 18-200mm lens costs 12k (grey) but lack IS, it will have IS with the Sony.

However if you don't like distortions and CA, then get the Canon 1000D since it has two nice budget lenses like the 18-55mm IS and the 55-250mm IS respt. Plus you can get a nice cheap low light lens like the 50mm f1.8.

The 1000D should be approx the same cost ~ 25k (grey) with the 18-55 IS lens.

The Sony kit lens is optically worse than the Sony, but the telephoto end is longer at 70mm compared to the standard 55mm on the Canon.

Or if you want something a bit cheaper (but highly capable), get the Nikon D40 with 18-55mm VR lens for 20k (grey). The Nikon also has a nice budget low light lens (50mm f1.8) BUT it will only MF on the Nikon. So keep that in mind.

^yes the price is mentioned in their website.i agree the canon EOS 1000d camera kit lens is better ,from the review shots i can see that the canon produces shaper images and also the canon cmos sensor is better by a very small margin .but in sony getting a free image stabiliztion in every lens is a plus point and it will be cheaper in the grey market by around 3 to 4k.and even at 24990 in showroom with 3 years warranty is still a great deal

nikon d40 is good but its just a 6 mp camera, and if u want the good nikon 70-300mm auto focus lens it will cost about 20k.
