PlayStation 3 goes from being outsold 6-to-1 to 3-to-1 in Japan

For the most part, the Wii is dominating current generation console sales worldwide. Sony, which for the past two generations been the market leader, trails Nintendo by a considerable margin even in its home territory of Japan – but the margin is narrowing.

The most recent sales figures gathered by Enterbrain, according to Reuters, shows the Wii outselling the PlayStation 3 only by a ratio of three-to-one during August. In the four weeks ending August 26, 245,653 units of the Wii and 81,541 units of PS3 sold in Japan. Previous data from June had the Wii outselling the PlayStation 3 by six-to-one.

The latest sales numbers for the U.S. show a similar improved ratio between the Wii and the PS3. During July, Nintendo sold 425,000 units and Sony sold 159,000 PS3 units over the month. The North American sales gap between the two consoles was narrowed with the help of Sony’s $100 price drop on the 60GB version of its console.

Nintendo’s dominance of the Japanese gaming market has helped the Kyoto-based company overtake Sony in market value, put it ahead of both NTT and Honda, making it the fifth largest company in Japan.
